New Orleans Attack
On January 1, 2025, at around 3:15 a.m. CST, a devastating attack occurred in New Orleans, specifically on Bourbon Street in the French Quarter. The assailant, identified as Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a 42-year-old U.S. citizen and Army veteran from Texas, drove a rented Ford pickup truck into a crowd celebrating New Year’s Day, killing at least 15 people and injuring dozens more. After ramming into the crowd, Jabbar exited the vehicle and began shooting at responding law enforcement officers, wounding two officers before being killed during the subsequent shootout.

The truck displayed an ISIS flag, and investigators found weapons and potential improvised explosive devices (IEDs) both in the vehicle and around the French Quarter. The FBI is leading the investigation, treating the incident as an act of terrorism while also exploring Jabbar’s possible affiliations with terrorist organizations. The attack happened amidst ongoing construction to replace security bollards on Bourbon Street, which might have played a role in the truck’s ability to penetrate the crowd. The city was in the midst of preparations for the Super Bowl, which was expected to be held in New Orleans in February 2025.
Trump Tower Attack
On January 1, 2025, an explosion involving a Tesla Cybertruck occurred outside the Trump International Hotel Las Vegas. The explosion took place at approximately 8:40 a.m. PST when a 2024 Tesla Cybertruck pulled up to the valet area of the hotel, started smoking, and then exploded. The incident resulted in one fatality (the driver inside the Cybertruck) and seven others sustaining minor injuries. The explosion is being investigated as a possible act of terrorism. Authorities found fireworks-style mortars and other explosive materials within the truck. The FBI, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, and other agencies are involved in the investigation, checking for connections to other recent events, including a terror attack in New Orleans that occurred earlier that day. These are tragic starts to 2025.
