Official at last

United have confirmed the signing of Cristian Orozco from Colombian side Fortaleza CEIF, closing out a deal that had reportedly been agreed in principle since late last year but couldn’t be finalised until now. Fabrizio Romano marked it official this week, and the club followed with their own confirmation. It’s United’s sixth arrival of the summer and by far the lowest profile of the lot, with the fee reported at around £850,000 for an 18 year old most fans outside Colombia had never heard of twelve months ago.

Why it took so long

FIFA rules block international transfers for players under 18, so United had to wait on this one until Orozco’s birthday cleared the way. That’s normal for deals like this. Plenty of clubs quietly tie up young South American talent well before anyone actually sees them kicking a ball in first team colours.

Who is he

Orozco is a defensive midfielder who came through the academy at Rojo FC before breaking into Fortaleza’s first team, where he made five appearances last season in Colombia’s top flight. He captained Colombia at the Under-17 World Cup, which says plenty about the reputation he’s carrying into Carrington. The reports out of Colombia describe him as composed on the ball with real physical presence for his age, more of a screening midfielder than a runner.

What happens now

Don’t expect to see him near the first team this season. Orozco joins United’s academy setup and needs time to adjust to the football, the culture and the league before anyone starts talking about him training with Michael Carrick’s squad. It’s a signing that means nothing in August and could mean plenty in three or four years if the early reports hold up. United have spent this summer rebuilding the midfield for right now with Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans, and for a decade from now with bets like this one.
