Privacy Policy

Effective date: October 18, 2026  ·  Last updated: October 18, 2026

1. Who we are

This Privacy Policy describes how Mav Jones (operating the website mavjones.com, the "Site") collects, uses, and shares personal information. Mav Jones is an independent Manchester United fan site. Contact: mavjones@mavjones.com.

2. Information we collect

Information you provide:

  • Newsletter sign-up: if you subscribe, we store the email address you enter and the page you subscribed from. That is all — there is no account, password, or profile.
  • Email correspondence: if you email us, we receive your email address and message contents.
  • Article comments: if you leave a comment, we store the name and email address you enter, your comment text, and your IP address and browser user agent. The name and comment are shown publicly. Your email address is never published; it is used to check for spam and, if you have a Gravatar account, to display your avatar. If you tick the “save my details” box, your browser stores your name and email in cookies so you do not have to retype them next time.

Information collected automatically:

  • Log data: standard web server logs including IP address, browser type, pages visited, and timestamps.
  • Analytics: Google Analytics measures how the Site is used (pages viewed, approximate location, device and browser type, referring site) so we know which coverage people actually want.
  • Advertising: where display ads are shown, ad networks may set cookies to measure and select ads. See section 9.
  • Anti-spam signals: the newsletter form applies basic rate limiting by IP address to block automated sign-ups. Comments are screened by Akismet, which receives the comment, the name, email address, IP address and user agent supplied with it in order to decide whether it is spam.

3. How we use your information

  • Operate, maintain, and secure the Site.
  • Send the email newsletter to people who asked for it.
  • Understand which articles are read so we can cover more of what readers want.
  • Measure advertising and affiliate performance.
  • Detect and prevent spam, fraud, abuse, and security threats.
  • Respond to your inquiries.
  • Comply with applicable legal obligations.

4. Legal basis for processing (EEA / UK users)

We process personal data under one or more of the following legal bases under the GDPR / UK GDPR:

  • Consent: where you have opted in, such as subscribing to the newsletter, submitting a comment, or accepting analytics and advertising cookies.
  • Legitimate interests: site security, spam prevention, understanding readership, and operating the Site.
  • Legal obligation: where required by applicable law.

5. How we share your information

We do not sell your personal information. We share information with the following categories of service providers strictly for the purposes of operating the Site:

  • GoDaddy.com, LLC: website hosting, content delivery, and email/SMTP delivery. godaddy.com/legal/.../privacy-policy
  • Google LLC: Google Analytics for audience measurement, and Google AdSense where display advertising is active. policies.google.com/privacy
  • Affiliate networks: when you click an affiliate link (for example to the official Manchester United store, Amazon, or Fanatics), that retailer and its affiliate network may set a cookie to attribute the referral. We never receive your name, address, or payment details — only aggregate commission reporting.

Newsletter email addresses are stored on our own WordPress installation and are not shared with or sold to third parties.

We may also disclose information when required by law, valid legal process, or to protect the rights, safety, or property of Mav Jones, users, or others.

6. The newsletter

The newsletter is opt-in. We only email you if you entered your address yourself. Every email includes an unsubscribe link, and you can also ask to be removed at any time by emailing mavjones@mavjones.com. If a newsletter ever carries a paid sponsorship it will be clearly labelled — see the affiliate and advertising disclosure.

7. Data retention

We keep your newsletter email address until you unsubscribe or ask us to delete it, after which it is removed. You can request deletion at any time by emailing mavjones@mavjones.com; we will delete or anonymize your data within a reasonable period unless we are required to keep it by law. Web server logs and analytics data are retained for a limited period as standard for hosting and measurement operations.

8. Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have the following rights with respect to your personal information:

  • Access the personal data we hold about you.
  • Correct inaccurate or incomplete information.
  • Delete your personal data.
  • Object to or restrict processing.
  • Data portability: receive your data in a portable, machine-readable format.
  • Withdraw consent at any time where processing is based on consent.

To exercise these rights, email mavjones@mavjones.com. We respond within the timeframes required by applicable law.

California residents (CCPA / CPRA): you have the right to know what personal information is collected, used, shared, or sold; to request deletion; to opt out of the sale of personal information (we do not sell it); and to non-discrimination for exercising these rights.

EU / UK residents (GDPR / UK GDPR): in addition to the rights above, you have the right to lodge a complaint with your local supervisory authority.

9. Cookies and similar technologies

The Site uses the following categories of cookies and similar storage:

  • Strictly necessary: security tokens, and remembering that you dismissed the cookie notice (stored in your browser's localStorage).
  • Comment details: if you leave a comment and tick the box to save your details, WordPress sets cookies storing the name, email address and website you entered, so the form is pre-filled next time. These are set only if you opt in, and they expire after a year.
  • Analytics: Google Analytics cookies, used to measure Site usage.
  • Advertising: where display ads are active, Google and its partners may use cookies to serve and measure ads. Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads based on your visit to this and other sites. You can opt out of personalised advertising at adssettings.google.com.

You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings. The Site will still work, though analytics and ad measurement will be limited.

10. International data transfers

Our service providers (GoDaddy, Google) are based in or process data through the United States. If you access the Site from outside the United States, your personal information will be transferred to and processed in the U.S. By using the Site you consent to this transfer.

11. Children's privacy

The Site is not directed to children under 13 years of age (or the equivalent minimum age under applicable law, such as 16 in parts of the EEA). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under that age. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, contact us at mavjones@mavjones.com and we will promptly delete it.

12. Security

We use reasonable industry-standard safeguards including HTTPS for all traffic, restricted administrative access, and rate limiting on public forms to deter automated abuse. No method of transmission or storage is perfectly secure, but we work to protect your information.

13. Third-party links

The Site links to third-party services such as TikTok, X, and retailers we have an affiliate relationship with. We are not responsible for the privacy practices or content of third-party sites and recommend reviewing their privacy policies independently.

14. Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. The "Last updated" date above will reflect the most recent change. Material changes will be communicated through the Site.
