Olid gets the job

Manchester United have moved fast to replace Marc Skinner, confirming Eva Olid as the new head coach of the Women’s team on a deal running through to June 2028, with the option of a further year. The 40 year old Spaniard was appointed just days after Skinner’s exit by mutual agreement, and she’s already been meeting the squad with barely a month to go before the new Women’s Super League season kicks off on September 4.

Who is she

Olid’s route to Old Trafford has been anything but conventional. She started out coaching at Spanish clubs Sant Quirze, Sant Cugat and Sabadell, had a spell working with Houston Dynamo’s youth setup in the United States, and later took charge of the Catalan Football Association side. None of that is really what got her this job though. It’s her five years at Heart of Midlothian that did it. She took over at Hearts in 2021 with the club bottom of the Scottish Women’s Premier League and left this May with their first ever league title in the bag, a genuine rebuild from the bottom up.

The gap everyone’s pointing at

Here’s the honest bit. Olid has never managed in the Women’s Super League, and there’s a real jump between Scottish women’s football and one of the toughest top flights anywhere. United finished fourth last season under Skinner and missed out on Europe, and the whole point of this change was supposedly getting closer to the top of the table, not further away. Turning around a club at the bottom of a smaller league is a different job to walking into a WSL dressing room full of internationals and getting results from week one.

Why United still like it

What she does bring is proof she can take a struggling group and actually fix it, and that’s the exact job our women’s side needs doing right now. Skinner won an FA Cup and got United into the Champions League for the first time, but the league form had flattened out and the club clearly wanted a different voice in the building. Olid herself called the move a dream come true and talked up the club’s training setup and academy on her way in. Whether that translates to points on the board is a different question, and she won’t have long to find out. Four weeks to get a squad ready for a WSL opener is not much of a runway.
