Ruben Amorim Faces Manchester United on Saturday. Nobody Is Calling It a Friendly.
Some fixtures you schedule. Others the calendar hands you and everybody just stares.
Manchester United play AC Milan in Wroclaw on Saturday afternoon, and standing in the opposite technical area will be Ruben Amorim, seven months after United sacked him. First time he has faced them. Last game before the season starts. Nobody involved is going to call this a friendly with a straight face.
How it ended
Remember the shape of it, because Saturday only makes sense with January in front of you.
United drew 1-1 at Leeds on 4 January. Afterwards Amorim stood in front of the cameras and demanded that others at the club “do their jobs.” Less than twenty four hours later he was gone, fourteen months after arriving from Sporting with a reputation as one of the brightest coaches in Europe.
Michael Carrick took over as interim. He has the job permanently now, and United have not looked back.
The numbers were worse than the memory
Time softens things, so here they are again.
Amorim won 24 of 63 matches in charge, a win rate of 38.1 percent. In the Premier League he averaged 1.23 points per game, which is the lowest of any Manchester United manager in the entire Premier League era. Not one of the lowest. The lowest.
He lost a third of his matches, a rate not seen at this club since Frank O’Farrell was relieved of his duties in 1972. Nineteen league defeats, a figure only Ange Postecoglou bettered for the wrong reasons across the same stretch. His longest winning run was three games, against Rangers, Fulham and FCSB, and two of those were in the Europa League.
That is the record walking into Wroclaw on Saturday.
The bit that is almost too neat
Amorim’s United career ended with a 1-1 draw against Leeds United.
On Wednesday night at Croke Park, in front of 82,000 people, Michael Carrick’s Manchester United drew 1-1 with Leeds United.
The difference is that Carrick’s side won the shootout, and that his 1-1 was a deliberate exercise in resting senior players three days before facing his predecessor. Same scoreline, same opponent, entirely different mood. Football does not usually write itself this cleanly.
What he walked into at Milan
Milan appointed Amorim on 16 June, replacing Massimiliano Allegri after a fifth place finish in Serie A that dropped them into the Europa League. It is a genuine rebuild and he has said the job was always an ambition of his.
“There are ambitions that stay with you throughout your career, and coaching AC Milan has always been one of mine,” he said on arrival.
The summer has brought Goncalo Ramos from PSG to lead the line, Mario Gila from Lazio at centre back, and 20-year-old Sankhoun Diawara from Troyes. The pre-season has not gone smoothly. One win, two draws and two defeats in their last five, seven goals conceded, and most recently a 3-0 defeat to Chelsea.
So he arrives at this game needing a performance rather more than United do.
The man he exiled is in the building
Here is the subplot nobody scripted.
Marcus Rashford has not played for Manchester United since December 2024. The reason he has not played for Manchester United since December 2024 is Ruben Amorim, who removed him from the squad and left him there until a loan to Aston Villa and then a season at Barcelona took him out of the country entirely.
Rashford is back. He rejoined the squad in Dublin on Sunday, he is reportedly taking the number 14 shirt, and he did not get on the pitch against Leeds. Most of the reporting suggests Saturday in Wroclaw is where he plays his first minutes.
Against the manager who froze him out. You could not sell that as fiction.
What United look like now
The contrast is the whole story.
United finished third last season, seven points behind Manchester City, winning five of their final six to secure Champions League football for the first time in two years. Carrick spent the summer fixing the defence and midfield that shipped fifty goals, bringing in Andrey Santos from Chelsea for around fifty million and Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa for thirty five.
Pre-season has not been flawless. They lost the opener 1-0 to Wrexham in Helsinki, then beat Rosenborg and Atletico Madrid, drew with PSG and drew with Leeds before winning the shootout. Two wins, two draws and a defeat. But the mood around this club has not been this settled in a long time.
Amorim will know all of that. He will also know that a good chunk of the squad lining up against him is the same squad he could not get a tune out of.
What actually matters on Saturday
Strip the narrative away and there is a football match with real stakes, because this is the last one before Hull City away on 22 August.
Three things worth watching. Whether Santos and Tielemans finally start together, because they have now gone three matches without sharing a pitch and this is the last chance to see it before it counts. Whether Rashford gets his minutes, and what he looks like. And whether the senior back four, rested at Croke Park, can keep a clean sheet against a Milan side that has conceded seven in five.
Carrick will pick something close to his opening day team. Amorim will want to win it badly, and a Milan side that just lost 3-0 to Chelsea needs the lift more than United do.
The honest bit
It is a friendly. Nobody gets relegated, nobody lifts anything, and both managers care more about fitness than the scoreline.
But football is not only about what is at stake. Sometimes a man gets sacked, watches his replacement take the club back to the Champions League, and then runs into that club on a Saturday afternoon in Poland before either season has started. There is no trophy in that. There is still an enormous amount riding on it, and every person in both dugouts knows exactly what it is.
