Confirmed: Cunha Starts as a False Nine, Rashford on the Left

Team sheets are in at Old Trafford, and Michael Carrick has made one call that changes the shape of the afternoon.
United (4-2-3-1): Lammens; Dalot, Maguire, Martinez, Shaw; Mainoo, Tielemans; Mbeumo, Fernandes, Rashford; Cunha.
Ipswich (4-2-3-1): Scherpen; O’Shea, Diop, Greaves, Davis; Lukic, Nunez; Fatawu, Enciso, Maeda; Emersonn.
Marcus Rashford starts, and it’s his first start since coming back. He came off the bench at Hull. He wears the 9 and he is playing on the left, which is where he should be.
Cunha, not Sesko, and that’s the whole story
We argued yesterday for Benjamin Sesko through the middle, on the grounds that Ipswich defend higher than Hull did and the profile that hurts a high line is a runner attacking the space behind it. Carrick has gone the other way and picked Matheus Cunha as a false nine, exactly as he did at Hull.
The reasoning is not hard to see, and it’s a different bet rather than a bad one. Ipswich press hard, and their own programme entry gives the number: over 22 per cent of their high turnovers produced a shot last season. Cunha dropping off the front line turns United’s 4-2-3-1 into something closer to a box in midfield, and gives Mainoo and Tielemans a third body against Saša Lukić and Marcelino Núñez. That is a plan built to beat the press through the middle.
The cost is that nobody occupies Issa Diop and Jacob Greaves. Ipswich’s centre-backs can step up all afternoon without anyone threatening the space they leave, and United’s forward line becomes three players who all want to receive to feet. Sesko on the bench is the obvious hour-mark change if the game is stuck.
The two matchups we flagged are both live
Rashford is on United’s left. Dara O’Shea, a centre-back by trade, is at right-back for Ipswich. That is the one-against-one this game turns on, and it’s on.
The other one is at the far end of the same back four. Leif Davis is Ipswich’s overlapping left-back and their set-piece deliverer, so the grass appears behind him, on United’s right. Bryan Mbeumo holds the width there and Diogo Dalot starts at right-back to attack it. That was the pick we called risky yesterday, because Dalot also has the hardest defensive job on the pitch, and Carrick has made it.
He’s also kept Youri Tielemans, which will not be universally popular. Tielemans conceded the free-kick Hull scored from and was the first outfield player hooked that day. In a two rather than a three he has less cover than we’d have given him, and his afternoon is now about how quickly he can move the ball away from pressure.
Ipswich are unchanged, and their top scorer is on the bench again
Gary O’Neil has named the same eleven that beat Sunderland 2-1 at Portman Road. No reason to do otherwise, but the detail worth knowing is that Jack Clarke starts on the bench for the second league game running.
Clarke is their top scorer, he came off the bench to win the opening game in the 90th minute, and he won a team-high 64 fouls last season, which is where Davis’s set-piece deliveries come from. Ipswich have chosen to keep him as a weapon against tired legs rather than start him. United’s centre-backs get an hour before that changes.
Daizen Maeda stays on the left rather than moving to the right, so Ipswich keep the lopsided attack their programme profile described: the left side carries Davis overlapping and Maeda holding width, and the right is the quieter one.
Two things to watch early
First, what happens the first time Martinez has the ball on the halfway line with Julio Enciso closing. Ipswich’s entire scoring method is the turnover, and both their goals at Portman Road came from a Sunderland mistake in build-up rather than from open play.
Second, the first Ipswich corner. United conceded twice from dead balls at Hull, and Ipswich’s route to a set piece is Clarke or Maeda drawing a foul wide and Davis putting it in. Harry Maguire is in the side partly for that reason and partly because he’s the only aerial threat United have at the other end.
Kick-off is 4.30pm UK, 11:30 in the morning Eastern. Team news, injuries and the tactical read from the matchday programme are here, and the fixture list is on the schedule page.
