Manchester United were 2-0 up inside ten minutes against a rotated Brighton side and lost 3-2. They are out of the Carabao Cup at the first hurdle for the second season running, and the last sound at Old Trafford was booing.
One number frames the night. It’s the first time in 50 years that United have led 2-0 at home and lost the game. They’d won 143 of the previous 145.
The ten minutes that suggested otherwise
Shea Lacey, making his first United start, took the ball past two defenders and finished at the near post on eight minutes. Forty-three seconds after the restart, Jason Steele pushed out a Marcus Rashford effort and Mason Mount put in the rebound.
Two-nil, ten minutes gone, and an academy debutant scoring the opener in a side with eight changes in it. Whatever happens next, Lacey’s night was real.
Then they stopped
Brighton had the ball in United’s box 39 times. United managed 17 at the other end. Brighton created five big chances, United one. Possession finished level at 50%, which tells you United weren’t being overrun so much as standing still.
Charalampos Kostoulas pulled one back in first-half stoppage time, a goal Sky’s report puts down to questionable goalkeeping from Karl Darlow on his debut. That’s a hard way to start, and he won’t enjoy the replay.
Pascal Gross equalised on 65, finishing from close range after Benjamin Sesko headed a cross back across his own six-yard box. Four minutes later Maxim De Cuyper, on the pitch for three minutes, scored the winner after a long run from fellow substitute Diego Gomez.
United didn’t have another shot on target until the 76th minute.
The cavalry made it worse
Carrick sent on Bryan Mbeumo, Kobbie Mainoo and Joshua Zirkzee on 66, with the game level. Bruno Fernandes followed on 73 and Matheus Cunha on 80. Between the first of those changes and the final whistle, United conceded the winner and created almost nothing.
Rashford had the best of it, a one-on-one that would’ve made it 3-3, and missed. Twelve shots, four on target, one big chance, at home, against a team that made nine changes of its own.
What this actually costs
The Carabao Cup was the shortest route to a trophy this season and it lasted 90 minutes. It’s the second year in a row United have gone out at the first time of asking, the tie we previewed on Wednesday morning as the first competition this season United could actually win, and last season they managed the same trick in the FA Cup, losing at home to Brighton in January.
Carrick said on Tuesday that trophies are “the reason I am at this club, to fight to win”. His side led 2-0 at home against a Brighton team without Bart Verbruggen, Lewis Dunk, Kaoru Mitoma, Yankuba Minteh, Mats Wieffer and Evan Ferguson, and lost.
The honest read on the selection
The team wasn’t the problem for ten minutes. Eight changes, three academy players in the squad, a debutant goalkeeper, and they were two goals up and playing well.
The problem is what happened when Brighton turned it up: no midfield control, no game management, and a second half in which a 2-0 lead became 2-3 in 24 minutes of actual football. United have now conceded in every game this season except the Sabah night, and they have conceded three at home to a reserve side.
The league table says four points from four, three days after losing the derby to ten men. The cup says out. The mood at full time said the rest.
Where it goes now
Fulham away on Sunday, 11:30 AM Eastern, and the international break after it. If there’s a case for resting Bruno, Mainoo, Cunha and Mbeumo, Sunday is where it has to be repaid.
Pascal Gross, who’s seen a few of these, summed the night up from the other side: Brighton have started slowly three times this season, and three times they’ve come back and won.
That’s the difference in one sentence. One team knew what to do when the game turned. The other had a two-goal lead at Old Trafford and 143 precedents telling them how it usually ends.
