Skinner departs by mutual agreement
Marc Skinner has left his role as head coach of Manchester United Women, with the club confirming the split on Monday, August 3. It’s described as a mutual agreement, and it brings an end to five years in charge, coming at an awkward moment with the new Women’s Super League season kicking off on September 4, barely a month away.
Why it happened
This wasn’t a straightforward results sacking, even if the results played a part. United finished fourth in the WSL last season and missed out on European qualification, and it sounds like that sparked a wider conversation over the summer about where the club goes from here. Skinner had signed a new two-year deal only last summer, so this isn’t something either side planned for. By the sound of it, the disagreement came down to investment and direction rather than results alone. Skinner himself had said that with the right investment in the right areas, the team could meet its expectations, which tells you roughly where the sticking point was.
Five years, one major trophy
Whatever the ending, the man deserves his flowers on the way out. Skinner took United to their first ever Women’s Champions League qualification and delivered the club’s first major trophy on the women’s side, winning the FA Cup in 2024. He reached three straight FA Cup finals across his time in charge. That’s a genuine foundation to build on, even if last season’s league finish suggested things had started to flatten out.
What happens now
No interim coach or permanent successor has been named yet, and with the WSL opener a month out, United don’t have much time to sort it. Whoever takes over inherits a squad that has shown it can win cups but needs to close the gap in the league.
