Bruno Fernandes Captains Portugal the Night After Ronaldo Walks Out

Bruno Fernandes captained Portugal to a 4-2 win over Denmark in Copenhagen on Thursday night and set up two of the goals. He did it a day after Cristiano Ronaldo walked out of the squad, and four days after his own coach rested him with an injury he’d brought from Manchester United. For United, the good news and the worry are the same fact: he played almost all of it.
What Bruno did in Copenhagen
He started as the number ten and wore the armband. His through ball sent Gonçalo Ramos clear to make it 2-1 on 25 minutes, and his cross found Vitinha for the header that put Portugal 3-2 up on 67. João Cancelo had scored the first on 13 minutes, and João Félix finished it on 87.
That last goal was made by another United player. Diogo Dalot came on for Cancelo on 63 minutes and set up Félix.
Denmark’s second came from a name United fans know. Rasmus Højlund, sold to Napoli in the summer, ran onto a Mikkel Damsgaard pass and made it 2-2 on 53 minutes. Patrick Dorgu wasn’t there to see it. He’s back at Carrington with the hamstring problem he picked up against Wales.
Bruno wasn’t taken off until stoppage time, when Tomás AraĂşjo replaced him. Late in the second half ESPN’s match feed logged a stoppage for an injury to Fernandes. He got up and carried on. Nobody from Portugal had explained it by the time we published, so we’re not going to guess what it was.
The day before: Ronaldo leaves
The armband was only free because of what happened on Wednesday. Ronaldo, 41, had been left on the bench for the whole of Portugal’s 2-1 win in Norway on Sunday after warming up. At his press conference in Copenhagen, Jorge Jesus said there was no problem, that he’d told Ronaldo he wouldn’t play these two games, and that no player would change his ideas.
Within hours Ronaldo was gone. His statement, as carried by Sky Sports: “Following the national team manager’s press conference, and after a conversation with the President of the Portuguese Football Federation, I decided to leave the national team’s training camp.” He added that he’d tell the Portuguese people the truth about his reasons “in due course”, and wished his teammates luck “without exception”.
The federation confirmed it the same evening and said preparation would go on with the remaining 24 players. Rafael LeĂŁo wore the number seven in Copenhagen. Ronaldo leaves, for now at least, with 146 goals in 234 games for Portugal, both national records.
Nobody has said this is the end. Jesus said on matchday there’d be time to talk about it after the games. And nobody has said the captaincy is Bruno’s to keep. What’s certain is that on the first night without Ronaldo, the armband went to United’s captain, and Portugal scored four.
The injury question hasn’t gone away
This is the part that matters at Old Trafford. Last Saturday Jesus said Bruno had come to the squad with an injury from United and had been playing through pain for about three games, and left him out in Oslo. We covered that in our piece on the injury.
On Monday he was back. CNN Portugal reported that he’d recovered and trained with the group without limitations. On Wednesday Jesus told the story of how it came out, per NotĂcias ao Minuto’s live transcript. In our translation: “After the Wales game he was carrying a knock, but I know Bruno, he’s worked with me. I asked him, what’s going on? You’re not the Bruno I know. He opened up to me. I told him, you’re not playing the next game. You’ll play in Denmark if you recover.”
He recovered, played, and ran the game. That’s the best evidence so far that the problem is manageable. It still hasn’t been named. Neither United nor the Portuguese federation has said what the injury is, and we’re not going to name a body part for them.
What it means for United
Portugal have won all three games under Jesus and host Norway in Porto on Sunday 4 October. If Bruno plays that one too, he’ll come back to Carrington with a week before United’s season restarts:
- Tottenham at Old Trafford, Saturday 10 October
- Atlético Madrid away in the Champions League, Tuesday 13 October
- Leeds away, 18 October
Carrick is already waiting on Dorgu, Benjamin Sesko, Marcus Rashford, Kobbie Mainoo and Noussair Mazraoui, as our injury round-up set out. He can’t add his captain to that list.
So Thursday was a good night. United’s most important player looked like himself, and he did it with the armband of a national team that had just lost its biggest name. The honest caveat is the late stoppage, and the fact that nobody outside the two medical rooms knows what he’s been playing through. Sunday in Porto is the next check, and our international duty list has the rest of the fixtures.

Jorge Jesus’s press conference of Wednesday 30 September from NotĂcias ao Minuto’s live transcript (quoted in our translation), and his matchday comment from RTP. Bruno’s return to full training on Monday 28 September from CNN Portugal. Jesus’s comments of 26 September from Record’s transcript, as used in our earlier piece. One note on that earlier piece: it said we couldn’t find the phrase “complicated problem” in the Portuguese reports; Mais Futebol’s report of the same press conference does carry it (“um problema complicado”). No body part has been named by the club or the federation. Portugal 1-0 Wales and Norway 1-2 Portugal from RTP, ESPN and Sky Sports.
