Bruno Fernandes will be on the 30-man shortlist for the 2026 Ballon d’Or when France Football publishes it on Monday. That’s Sam Cohen’s report on Sunday night, and it hasn’t been contradicted anywhere. The list goes up on ballondor.com on 8 September, which is also Bruno’s 32nd birthday, and the winner is announced in London on 26 October, the first ceremony held outside Paris since 2019.
It’s his second nomination. The first was 2021, when he finished 21st with six points. No player has been shortlisted for a season in a United shirt since Cristiano Ronaldo in 2022, and Ronaldo polled zero points that year, 20th of 30. Scott McTominay made the 2025 list, but for what he did at Napoli.
What got him on the list
Nine goals and 21 assists in 35 Premier League games, 3,066 minutes, and the single-season assist record broken on the final day against Brighton. Henry and De Bruyne held it at 20. Eleven of the 21 came from set pieces, level with Steven Gerrard’s 2013/14 mark. United finished third on 71 points, 69 scored and 50 conceded, a year after finishing 15th.
The individual awards followed in order: the PFA Players’ Player of the Year, the first United winner since Wayne Rooney in 2010; the FWA Footballer of the Year; the Premier League Player of the Season, the first United winner since Nemanja Vidić in 2010/11; and a fifth Sir Matt Busby award, which nobody else has managed. He’s started this season with a hat-trick against Ipswich, the club’s Player of the Month for August, and the league’s version still to be decided on 11 September.
Why he wasn’t on it last year
In 2024/25 he scored 19 and assisted 19 in 57 matches, and the jury left him off the 30 entirely. His only public reaction was an Instagram repost of McTominay’s nomination with five words on it: “Buzzing for you my friend.” United had finished 15th. The reason is in the voting rules.
The jury is one journalist from each of the top 100 nations in the FIFA rankings. Each of them ranks ten players from the 30, scoring 15, 12, 10, 8, 7, 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1. The criteria are published in order of priority: individual performance and impact first, collective achievements and trophies second, conduct third. Last year the second criterion kept him off. This year the first put him on, and the second will set his placing.
What the nomination is worth, honestly
His collective column is thin. United won nothing: out of the League Cup on penalties at Grimsby in August 2025, out of the FA Cup at Brighton in the third round, no European football at all. Portugal went out of the World Cup in the round of 16 to Spain, a Mikel Merino goal in stoppage time, and Bruno’s tournament was five starts, 423 minutes, no goals and one assist. He did become Portugal’s record World Cup assister, on four, but the jury weighs July more heavily than any other month.
Compare that with the top of the market. Harry Kane scored 73 for club and country, 61 of them for Bayern, the second-best season by anyone this century behind Messi’s 82 in 2011/12. Rodri won the World Cup and the Golden Ball with it. Lamine Yamal won it at 19. Kylian MbappĂ© took the tournament’s Golden Boot with ten. On Kalshi, where nearly $7m has been traded on this award, Kane sits at 65%, Yamal at 17%, MbappĂ© at 9% and Rodri at 5%. Bruno isn’t priced at all.
So the realistic range is the one his own history suggests: somewhere between the six points he got in 2021 and the 45 that put McTominay 18th last year. Anything in the top 15 would be a surprise. I don’t think the jury puts a midfielder from a trophyless season in the top ten.
Why it still matters
Because the correction is the point. A year ago 100 journalists looked at 19 and 19 in a 15th-place side and decided it wasn’t worth a place among 30. This year they’ve looked at nine and 21 in a third-place side and decided it is. That happened in 12 months, under a manager who took the job in January.
It also lands in a useful week. On Thursday he plays his first Champions League match since December 2023, on Sunday it’s City, and his contract is still the one everyone’s watching. A Ballon d’Or nominee with 21 assists and a club option to 2028 is a different negotiation from the one the club planned for a year ago.
He was the best player in England last season by every vote that counts. On 26 October the world’s jury will say so too, with a number somewhere in the twenties next to his name.
