Bruno Fernandes Is Player of the Year. He Has Ten Months Left on His Contract
Bruno Fernandes was voted the best player in England by the people he plays against. He’s 31, he’s in the final year of his contract, and there’s a release clause in it that went live this summer.
Those two facts arrived on the same evening, and only one of them is being talked about.
What he won, and the record underneath it
Fernandes was named PFA Players’ Player of the Year at the 53rd PFA Awards in Manchester on Tuesday night, beating Erling Haaland and Declan Rice in a vote decided by fellow professionals.
The season behind it: 21 assists, which is the most any player has managed in a single Premier League campaign. He passed Thierry Henry’s 2002/03 mark and Kevin De Bruyne’s from 2019/20, both of whom finished on 20, and he did it with his last contribution of the year against Brighton on the final day.
Add nine goals and it comes to 30 goal involvements in 35 starts, or 0.88 per 90 minutes, from 3,066 minutes and 136 chances created.
He had already won the Premier League Player of the Season award and the Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year before Tuesday. That is every major individual honour in English football, in one season, and it means the players, the writers and the league itself all reached the same conclusion independently.
The Team of the Year is the uncomfortable part
Fernandes made the PFA Premier League Team of the Year. He’s the only Manchester United player in it.
The rest reads: David Raya in goal, then Gabriel Magalhães, William Saliba, Jurriën Timber and Nico O’Reilly across the back, Declan Rice and Rayan Cherki alongside Fernandes, and Haaland, Antoine Semenyo and Igor Thiago in front. Arsenal have four. Manchester City have four. United have one.
That is the whole of last season in a single list. United finished third and produced the best individual player in the country, and not one other member of the squad was judged among the eleven best in their position.
A team carried by one player is a team with a very specific fragility, and it isn’t the sort you fix with midfielders.
The clause nobody wants to look at
Fernandes’ contract runs to 30 June 2027, with an option for a further year. He is in the final guaranteed season of it.
It also contains a release clause that became active this summer, reported at €65m, around £56.7m, and it’s only triggerable by a club outside England. Which means the two clubs who just put four players each into the Team of the Year can’t use it, but Real Madrid, Bayern, PSG and the Saudi Pro League can.
United have just watched the market value their captain at every award going, in the same window that a fixed price appeared on him that they do not control.
The reporting on what happens next does not agree. One line has him more likely to leave than stay now the clause is live. Another has him open to signing a new deal and United preparing talks as he enters his final year. Both are being written by people who cover this club closely, and we can’t tell you which is right.
What isn’t in dispute is the timing. A 31-year-old who has just won everything is at the point of maximum leverage, and United have a year.
What this award doesn’t tell you
Assists are a shared statistic. Twenty-one of them requires 21 finishes, and Fernandes had Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha converting at a rate that flatters any creator. The record is his, but it isn’t his alone, and a repeat depends on players who aren’t him.
It is also one season. Fernandes has been very good at United for six years and this is the first time he has been voted the best player in the league, which tells you something about how far above his own baseline he went. The honest expectation is regression, not repetition.
And he’s 32 next month. The assist record is a peak-season number, achieved at the age most attacking midfielders begin to lose a yard.
Where it leaves United
The club has spent £155m on central midfielders this summer and nothing on defenders. It has just been handed formal, unanimous confirmation that the best midfielder it owns is the one already on the books, the one whose deal expires in ten months, and the one a foreign club can buy for a fixed fee whenever it likes.
Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans and Carlos Baleba were bought to build a midfield around Fernandes. They’re worth a lot less if he isn’t in it.
So the question isn’t whether he deserved the award. Every voting body in the country has answered that. It is whether a club that spent a year haggling over a £70m midfielder can move as decisively on the contract of the one who just won Player of the Year, with a clause live and ten months on the clock.
