Man United 4-0 Sabah: Ten Shots on Target to None, Sesko Scores on His First Start, First Clean Sheet of the Season

Manchester United 4, Sabah 0. Three goals before half-time, a fourth from a centre-back after it, and Senne Lammens didn’t make a save. On the club’s 300th European Cup night, Sabah didn’t put a single shot on target.

Sesko scored on his first start of the season. Dorgu assisted from left-back. Zirkzee came on for his first minutes of the season and made a goal with a backheel. And after six conceded in three league games, it’s the first clean sheet of the season in any competition.

The goals

Matheus Cunha 27′. Patrick Dorgu, starting at left-back because Luke Shaw wasn’t in the squad, got to the byline and cut a low cross back into the six-yard box. Cunha finished first time from close range. A full-back’s assist from the position United didn’t sign for all summer.

Bruno Fernandes 42′. Youri Tielemans, kept in the side where every predicted eleven had Santos, slipped him in inside the box and Bruno finished. His fourth goal of the season, all in the last two home games.

Benjamin Sesko 45′. Bryan Mbeumo played him through and he finished in the last minute of the half. First start since Liverpool in May, first-half goal, and the Everton header no longer looks like a one-off.

Lisandro Martinez 68′. A Fernandes free-kick into the box, a Joshua Zirkzee backheel four minutes after coming on, and Martinez turned it in. A centre-back’s goal set up by a striker who hadn’t played a minute this season.

Dominated is the right word, and here are the numbers

United had 58 per cent of the ball, 21 shots to 11, and 10 on target to none. Expected goals 3.67 to 0.92. Forty-one touches in Sabah’s box against 12 in United’s. Seven corners to two. Stas Pokatilov, the goalkeeper the programme rated, made five saves and still conceded four. Lammens made none.

The one Sabah moment was Joy-Lance Mickels heading wide from inside the six-yard box in the 36th minute, at 1-0, and a shot that hit the woodwork. That’s the whole list. Two big chances for the visitors, both missed; five for United, four scored.

The second half was managed rather than played. Mount came on at half-time for Tielemans. Santos and Zirkzee replaced Mainoo and Sesko at 64, Amass and Lacey came on for Dorgu and Mbeumo at 72, and the fourth goal arrived in the middle of the changes. Dorgu was booked at 62, Ivan Lepinjica at 67. Nothing else happened, which after Hull, Ipswich and Everton is the point.

The clean sheet is the headline, whatever the opposition

Yes, it’s Sabah, a nine-year-old club on its Champions League debut. But United had conceded two in every game this season and were beaten to too many shots at Everton with a settled back four. Tonight Carrick changed three of the four, Yoro for Maguire, Mazraoui for Dalot and Dorgu for Shaw, and the new line didn’t face a shot on target. Sabah’s 0.92 expected goals came from two chances they missed, not from a pattern of pressure.

That doesn’t settle who starts against City. It does mean the argument on Sunday is about which four, not whether any four can keep the ball out.

Sesko, Dorgu, Zirkzee: three selection questions answered in one night

The line-ups piece called Sesko’s start the one selection worth arguing about. He scored, ran the channels for 64 minutes, and came off with the game won. Two goals in his last two appearances, and the thing that matters more for Sunday: he’s fit.

Dorgu at left-back was Carrick’s stated internal option and the assist for the opener was the best argument for it. Shaw’s absence still hasn’t been explained by the club.

Zirkzee hadn’t kicked a ball this season and United turned down Everton’s loan bid for him on deadline day. Four minutes into his first appearance he produced the backheel for Martinez. Carrick said on Wednesday that squad depth was “what we’re here for”, and this was the night it looked like it.

The 300th game, and what it was worth

The programme gave the home record in this competition as 147 played and 102 won. Make that 148 and 103. It’s Carrick’s first Champions League win as a manager, in his second game, and United’s first in the competition since a 1-0 at Copenhagen in October 2023.

Three points, a plus-four goal difference and a clean sheet in a 36-team league phase where the top eight go straight through is a good opening night. Barcelona and Arsenal are still to visit Sabah; Roma, Leipzig and Bayern are still to visit Old Trafford.
