Game 300, Opponent 82, Country 29: Reading United’s Own Programme Before Sabah

Tonight’s programme calls this United’s 300th game in the European Cup and Champions League, and Sports Mole adds the part the club left out: no other English side has got there. Sabah are the 82nd different opponent, Azerbaijan the 29th different country, and the whole thing is game 437 in Europe across every competition. The souvenir issue costs £4 at Old Trafford and can’t be bought in the United States, so here is what’s in it, with the parts a supporter can use.

The record the club chose to print

United’s home record in this competition, per the programme’s stats column: 147 played, 102 won, 27 drawn, 18 lost. That’s a 69 per cent win rate at Old Trafford across seven decades, and the 18 defeats include every one since Fenerbahce ended a 40-year, 57-game unbeaten home run on 30 October 1996.

Across the 299 games so far United have scored 545 and conceded 299, and 331 of the goals came at home. The programme stops there, which is the club being a club. The less flattering line, from Sports Mole’s preview, is that United have won one of their last seven group-stage or league-phase matches, with four defeats, the last of them the 0-1 to Bayern here in December 2023 that finished bottom of the group.

Tonight is also only Carrick’s second Champions League match as a manager. The first was the 2-0 at Villarreal as caretaker in November 2021, nearly five years ago.

Carrick’s notes are two sentences long where it matters

“We are really frustrated with the draw at Everton but tonight’s match against Sabah FK, the first of three home games in a week, is a chance for us to build momentum.”

Then: “Qualifying for this competition last season was a great step for the team, but we want more. We know where this club needs to be, and competing among the best teams in the world again is a big part of that.” The three home games are Sabah, City on Sunday at 11:30 AM Eastern, and Brighton in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday. Every predicted change tonight points at Sunday, and the manager’s own notes name the sequence rather than the opponent.

Who in this squad has actually done this

The programme answers a question the aggregators have been guessing at. The two most experienced Champions League players at the club are Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui, 50 appearances each. De Ligt isn’t available and Mazraoui is expected to start at left-back. Marcus Rashford is the squad’s top scorer in the competition with 17 in 48 games, 12 for United and 5 on loan at Barcelona last season, a split confirmed by Barcelona’s own site.

For scale: Ruud van Nistelrooy’s 38 is the club record, ahead of Rooney’s 34 and Giggs’s 29, and only Giggs, Scholes and Gary Neville have passed 100 appearances.

Mount’s interview is more honest than the format usually allows

The big interview is Mason Mount, and the useful lines are the ones about workload. “Having 40 games last season is not what we expect, and it’s not what we want, as footballers and footballers at this club.” Asked whether the busier calendar is a problem, he says the opposite: “The competition for places is high, and I think that’s a must-have, because it ups the level, ups everyone’s level within the team.”

On what wins a competition like this, a line that reads like a note on United’s own last campaign: “In a competition like this, it’s about one night, and what you can do on that night, unlike a league where there are so many games.” The stadium he wants is Galatasaray’s, because he missed the 3-3 there two seasons ago and “the atmosphere seems hostile”.

Mount is 27, wears 7 and has 72 games and 7 goals for United. He trained on Wednesday and is fit.

The Sabah pages are the best scouting in the book

The opposition section runs six pages and is specific in the way the Ipswich programme was. The shape is 4-2-3-1. The goalkeeper is the captain, Stas Pokatilov, a 33-year-old Kazakhstan international who conceded 22 in 30 league games last season with 13 clean sheets, and who shares the front cover with Bruno. The centre-backs are Steve Solvet and Rahman Dashdamirov, and the programme rates the pair.

The names to watch are the ones we flagged in the preview, now with the club’s numbers on them. Veljko Simic scored six times in qualifying. Joy-Lance Mickels, 32, has 77 goals in 149 games across two spells and four in this qualifying run, including the one that finished Hapoel Be’er Sheva. The set-piece taker is left-back Tymoteusz Puchacz, a 15-cap Poland international and former Plymouth loanee, who laid on five assists in qualifying. That’s where their goals come from when they don’t come from Simic.

The play-off comeback tells you what they are. Sabah were 4-2 down on aggregate with 14 minutes of the home leg left, scored twice, then twice more in extra time to go through 6-4. Their coach, Valdas Dambrauskas, is a 49-year-old Lithuanian who funded his coaching badges with 4,000 litas won on Lithuania’s Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? in August 2002. That’s about $1,100 at the time, roughly $2,000 today, and the programme calls it a year’s wages in Lithuania. He worked as a childminder and did a paper round in London while studying, and his first coaching job, in 2004, was with Manchester United Soccer Schools, where he spent five years on residential courses in the UK and Europe. He told the BBC this week: “I’ve been many times to Old Trafford with the kids, and now I’m going to come as a coach.” Brentford’s academy and a title with Zalgiris followed. Goal’s profile carries the same details.

Two more things the programme settles. Midfielder Khayal Aliyev is described as “currently injured”, which resolves the disagreement we reported on Wednesday between the club’s team news and ESPN’s “fully available”. And Sabah’s warm-up was a 5-0 home win over Zira on Saturday. The programme spells the opponent “Ziba” on page six and “Zira” on page 27, and FotMob has it as Zira.

The souvenir bits

The pennant feature is the reason to keep the copy. The museum’s oldest competitive-match pennant is Borussia Dortmund’s from the 1956 tie, when the home leg was played at Maine Road because Old Trafford had no floodlights. Tonight Pokatilov becomes the first captain of an Azerbaijani club to exchange one with a United skipper.

Saturday marks 70 years to the day since the first European Cup game, the 2-0 at Anderlecht on 12 September 1956. The 10-0 return at Maine Road two weeks later is still the club’s record win, and the eight-page long read runs from that night to game 300, ranking the 3-1 in Paris in 2019 as the best post-Ferguson moment.

The back page carries both squad lists: 33 United names including Ugarte, whose knee injury is reported to be season-ending, and JJ Gabriel at 77. Sabah list 30. The SumUp logo is on the sleeve for the first time, across men’s, women’s and academy kits.
