JJ Gabriel has told Manchester United he wants to leave, with immediate effect. The 15-year-old, who became the youngest player ever to appear for the club in August and scored a hat-trick on his UEFA Youth League debut five days ago, has asked for his academy registration to be cancelled. ESPN’s Rob Dawson and GiveMeSport both reported it on Tuesday afternoon, citing their own sources.
United’s position, according to both reports, is that it can be fixed. ESPN’s sources say club bosses were surprised by the decision and don’t know what prompted it, and that Gabriel remains under contract and can’t simply be de-registered. GiveMeSport reports he’d been in line to be named in the squad for Wednesday’s Carabao Cup tie against Brighton.
What he’s asking for, and why it isn’t a transfer request
A 15-year-old can’t hand in a transfer request, because there’s nothing to transfer. Gabriel isn’t on professional terms. He’s an academy player, and he can’t sign a professional contract until he turns 17 in October 2027. GiveMeSport reports that his current deal with United runs to next summer.
So the request is for the registration to be torn up now, which would leave him free to join another academy. The Premier League’s own guidance for academy families sets out how that works. A registration “may only be cancelled if everyone agrees (the Club, player, and their parent/carer)”. If the parties don’t agree, any of them can ask the Premier League “to provide a binding decision on a termination request by making a written application providing full reasons for the request.”
That second route is the one that matters here. United haven’t agreed, so if Gabriel’s camp pursue it, the Premier League decides, not the player and not the club.
Even if he gets out, he doesn’t leave for free
Moving academies triggers compensation under the Premier League’s Youth Development Rules. The league’s guidance describes a fixed formula based on age group and academy category, running from ÂŁ15,000 to ÂŁ80,000 for each year of development. United run a Category One academy and Gabriel has been there since 2021, so any club that takes him inherits that bill.
ESPN adds a timing detail that cuts the other way: Gabriel becomes eligible to sign scholarship forms with clubs next summer. That’s the natural exit point in the system. Asking to leave in September is asking to skip it.
He’s been here before
This is the second time. In June 2025, at 14, Gabriel looked set to leave after interest from Barcelona, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich. United called a meeting the day after he got back from holiday, Jason Wilcox made the case for a pathway to the first team, and he agreed to stay. The Athletic later reported that Manchester City had pursued him seriously that summer.
United then did what they said they’d do. He trained with the first team under Ruben Amorim. He was given squad number 77 on the Premier League list, which we covered in August. He came on for Bryan Mbeumo in the 82nd minute against Atletico Madrid in Stockholm on 1 August, aged 15 years and 299 days. And on 10 September he scored three in a 5-0 win over Sabah at Leigh.
The record behind that is real. He was the first winner of the Premier League’s Under-18 Player of the Season award in May, after 20 goals in 21 league games, and ESPN counts two goals for the Under-21s in Premier League 2 already this season.
Why now
Nobody on the record has said. GiveMeSport points to a possible breakdown in trust between his family and the club, and to frustration that he isn’t being treated the way Arsenal treat Max Dowman or Liverpool treat Rio Ngumoha. Both are teenagers their clubs have put into senior football early. Those are GiveMeSport’s reported explanations, not statements from Gabriel, his family or United.
What can be said is that United kept the promises they made in 2025: first-team training, a squad number, a senior appearance and a place in the Youth League side. Asked about him on 28 August, Carrick said he was “physically adapting to each step that he makes”. Adam Lawrence, who leads United’s professional development phase, has told ESPN that “JJ is surrounded by people that really, really believe in him from the top of the club.”
What happens next
The talks happen first. United got him to stay in 2025 with one meeting, they still hold the registration, and they believe this is rectifiable. The club’s leverage is the rulebook: no agreement means a written application to the Premier League, a decision the league makes, and compensation on the way out.
The Brighton squad on Wednesday night will be the first clue. If Gabriel’s name is on it, the conversation has gone United’s way.
