Manchester United’s squad list for 2026/27 went to the Premier League last week, and there’s a fifteen-year-old on it. JJ Gabriel has the number 77. He turns sixteen on 6 October.
The easy version of this story is “wonderkid gets shirt”. The more interesting version is how deliberately United are moving him, and how carefully Michael Carrick talked about him on Friday.
Who he actually is
Joseph Junior Andreou O’Cearuill, born in Enfield on 6 October 2010. A forward. He’s been at United’s academy for years and he was already training with the first team before last season, wearing 95.
Last season he became the youngest player ever to appear for United’s under-18s, at fourteen. He scored twice on that debut. United won it 13-1.
The goals, and why you’ll see four different numbers
On 12 May 2026 he won the Premier League Under-18 Player of the Season. Not a shared award or a club award. It was the first time the Premier League had given it to anyone, and he’s the inaugural winner.
Here’s where it gets awkward, and we’d rather show you the mess than pick the number that sounds best. The two most authoritative sources disagree.
- The Premier League, in its own announcement of its own award, says 20 goals in 21 league appearances.
- Manchester United published an MUTV compilation titled “All 23 JJ Gabriel league goals in 2025/26”.
Elsewhere you’ll find 19, 21 and 26 depending on the outlet. The likeliest explanation is that they’re counting different competitions, or counting to different dates, since the Premier League’s figure was published on the day of the award in mid-May and United’s covers a full season. We can’t confirm which, so we’re not going to pretend.
What isn’t in dispute is the shape of it: roughly a goal a game, at fifteen, against sixteen and seventeen-year-olds. He also scored two in three FA Youth Cup ties and helped United to the final, where they met Manchester City on 14 May.
His own line on the award was about as fifteen as it gets: “I’m delighted to win this award. I thank my coaches and team-mates for helping me win this amazing award.”
He has already played for the first team
This is the part a lot of the coverage has skipped. Gabriel isn’t waiting for a debut. He got one on 1 August, in the 2-1 win over AtlĂ©tico Madrid at the Strawberry Arena in Stockholm. He came on in the 82nd minute, replacing Bryan Mbeumo.
He was fifteen years and 299 days old. That made him the youngest player ever to appear in a Manchester United match, and while it was a friendly rather than a competitive fixture, the record is the record.
So the sequence over roughly fifteen months reads: youngest ever under-18 debutant at fourteen, two goals in that game, a season of about a goal a game, the first Premier League Under-18 Player of the Season award, an FA Youth Cup final, a pre-season tour, eight minutes against Atlético Madrid, and now a squad number.
What the 77 does and doesn’t mean
It doesn’t mean he’s playing against Ipswich on Sunday. It doesn’t mean he’s in the matchday squad at all.
What it means is administrative and still worth knowing: he’s on the list United filed with the Premier League, so if Carrick ever wants him, there’s no paperwork left to do. Squad numbers in the high seventies are where clubs park academy players who might be needed. Shea Lacey has the 31 and is expected to feature more this season. The Fletcher twins took 38 and 39.
Carrick was asked about him on Friday, and he was careful
Carrick watched the academy side at Leigh on Monday, and Gabriel played. Asked what the plan is for a player who’s still fifteen, he didn’t do the thing managers usually do with a talented kid.
“JJ’s one of the boys. He’s obviously got a really big talent. He’s trained with us quite a bit, he’s getting experience all the time, he’s physically adapting to each step that he makes, and just continue his development really.”
Read “physically adapting to each step that he makes” again. That’s a manager telling you the limiting factor isn’t ability, it’s a fifteen-year-old body playing against grown men, and that they’re going step by step rather than skipping any. He also made a point of praising the whole academy team rather than the one name: “I thought the boys played ever so well actually. The quality, the attitude, everything about the game was really good.”

The honest bit
Most academy players don’t make it. That’s not cynicism, it’s the base rate, and every United supporter over thirty can name five teenagers who were going to be the next one and weren’t. A squad number at fifteen is not a career.
But the things Gabriel has already done are facts rather than projections. The youngest-ever debut happened. The goals happened. The award had never been given to anyone before and it went to him. Eight minutes against Atlético Madrid happened, and Carrick chose to give them to him.
United have handled it the right way so far, which is to say slowly and without a fuss. The best thing anyone can do with this one is write the name down and leave him alone for a couple of years.
