Graphic summing up Manchester United 1-1 Tottenham on 10 October 2026: Mbeumo scored on 73, Bentancur was sent off on 78, Solanke equalised in the second minute of stoppage time, and United have six points from six games, their fewest at this stage since 1986-87.

Manchester United led a bottom-of-the-table side by a goal, against ten men, with twelve minutes plus stoppage time to play, and didn’t win. Bryan Mbeumo scored on 73, Rodrigo Bentancur was sent off on 78, and Dominic Solanke headed Tottenham level in the second minute of added time. Old Trafford booed at half-time and booed again at the end.

Six points from six games. Sky Sports says that’s United’s fewest at this stage of a league season since 1986-87.

Spurs should have been ahead by half-time

The first half was Tottenham’s. Inside three minutes Senne Lammens passed straight to Lucas Bergvall, Solanke was through, and Lammens had to save the shot and then smother the rebound. On 21 Savio cut the ball back and Mohammed Kudus hooked it wide of the near post. On 42 Solanke played in Conor Gallagher, who hesitated long enough for the defence to recover. The Peoples Person reports the home crowd booed the team off at the break.

United’s first shot didn’t come until the 34th minute, Amad Diallo on the counter from Mbeumo’s pass, low and straight at Antonin Kinsky. Carrick afterwards: “We couldn’t find a way to get ourselves into the game. With the ball, without the ball, we were off it.”

It didn’t improve straight after the restart. Savio rolled one across the six-yard box on 49 and Luke Shaw cleared; two minutes later Savio got to the byline and Solanke put the cross over from six yards. A Youri Tielemans finish was also ruled out, with the reports disagreeing on whether the ball had gone out before the cross or Tielemans was offside.

The triple change, and Baleba’s debut

Carrick made three changes at once on 59: Carlos Baleba for Tielemans, Diogo Dalot for Leny Yoro, Josh Zirkzee for Amad. Baleba’s first competitive minutes came 40 days after the transfer closed and eight days after the closed-doors friendly that was his only football for United. NBC’s live blog described a “huge roar” when he came on. Carrick said in the week there was “a little bit of patience there for him to get up to speed,” so half an hour is about what was promised.

The game turned with the changes. On 73 Matheus Cunha found Mbeumo on the left of the box, Mbeumo turned both ways to get away from Jan Paul van Hecke, and hit it low into the bottom right corner. Carrick: “It was a fantastic finish again, he’s obviously played different roles for us but we know what he offers.”

The red card

Five minutes later Bentancur, on since the 66th minute, went into Shaw with a challenge that Shaw took badly. Shaw shoved him to the ground with both hands, Bentancur got up and put his head into Shaw’s, and Stuart Attwell showed him a straight red. Shaw and van Hecke were booked in the same incident. Carrick: “I was just trying to get our players away from it, really, because it can escalate quite quickly. From what I saw down on the touchline, it looked like a red card.”

So United had a lead, an extra man and a crowd that had been waiting an hour to make some noise. “It’s a game we should kill off, and we didn’t,” Carrick said.

The equaliser

Sandro Tonali crossed from the right in the second minute of stoppage time. Lisandro MartĂnez was grappling with Solanke rather than watching the ball, and Solanke glanced the header past Lammens into the bottom corner. Marcus Rashford and Ayden Heaven came on three minutes later, which was too late to matter.

Carrick: “That’s two late goals which have hurt us, and things look very different. That’s the reality.” The other one was Everton’s 30-yard equaliser in the 96th minute in September. Ipswich also scored in added time in August. Three of United’s six league games have had a goal conceded after the 90th minute.

The numbers back the booing

Twelve shots each. Four on target for United, three for Spurs. Four corners each, possession split down the middle. Opta’s expected goals, via Sky Sports’ match stats and beIN Sports, put Tottenham on 1.56 and United on 0.77. beIN counts four Opta big chances for Spurs and one for United. The draw was the flattering result, and that’s with the visitors a man down for a quarter of an hour.

Roberto De Zerbi, whose team had three points from six to show for it: “We did not deserve to lose, for sure. Today, for the first time we showed we’re a team.” Carrick: “I’m not happy with the amount of points, I’m not hiding from that. It doesn’t change my belief, or confidence in the players. We can be a really good team.”

On the boos, to The Peoples Person’s question: “It’s not nice, it hurts a lot because I care about this club. But I understand the disappointment, the reality is what it is.”

What’s next

United have one league win from six, at home to Ipswich on 30 August. The club’s own programme on Saturday morning listed nine home wins from eleven in calendar 2026 and Spurs’ 25 defeats at Old Trafford. Neither number moved.

AtlĂ©tico Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday, then Leeds away on Sunday 18 October at 2pm UK. The confirmed line-ups from today are here, and the table updates once the weekend’s games are done.
