Amad in, Rashford out of the eleven

Amad hadn’t played a minute for United this season before today. He went down with an ankle injury in pre-season, got back into group training at the start of the month, and on Friday Michael Carrick would only say that “Amad, Kobbie and Marcus have done a little bit of training.” Of those three, two start. Rashford, who left the England camp with a hip problem, is the one held back.

The Peoples Person reads the shape as Amad on the right, Cunha on the left, Fernandes at ten and Mbeumo through the middle. Those are the same four players who started in attack when United beat Spurs 2-0 here in February. Mbeumo has had a hand in seven goals in his last six league games against Tottenham, per the club’s own programme, so putting him closest to goal isn’t a coin flip.

Yoro at right-back

This is the change nobody predicted. Dalot had started the last four league games and every published XI kept him there. Mazraoui would have been the alternative, but Carrick said on Friday he “took a knock” with Morocco and is “not quite right,” and he isn’t in the squad. Yoro gets the shirt instead, with Dalot on the bench if it doesn’t take.

Maguire and MartĂnez continue in the middle, Shaw at left-back for a second straight league game. Ayden Heaven is the defensive cover.

Who’s missing

Sesko is the headline absence. Carrick’s words on Friday: “Ben is further away with the injury he has, so he won’t be ready.” He described it as “a similar area” to the shin problem from the spring rather than the same injury, and on a return date, “it’s still not quite clear.” Dorgu “looks like he’ll be out for a number of weeks” with the hamstring he hurt playing for Denmark. Matthijs de Ligt and Manuel Ugarte remain out, and Tom Heaton isn’t in the squad either.

Baleba waits again

Baleba is named among the substitutes for the second time, after an unused afternoon at Fulham. His only minutes in a United shirt came in the closed-doors friendly against Lausanne eight days ago. Carrick’s line on Friday was that he’s “certainly getting closer” but “has missed a lot,” and that “there’s a little bit of patience there for him to get up to speed.” Mainoo and Tielemans keep the pivot, which is what every prediction had.

De Zerbi makes six changes

Tottenham’s eleven is six different from the one that lost 2-3 to Aston Villa before the break. Pedro Porro is out with a hamstring injury, so Archie Gray plays right-back. Micky van de Ven, who hurt a hand on Netherlands duty, drops to the bench and Marcos Senesi partners Jan Paul van Hecke. Destiny Udogie replaces Andy Robertson, who isn’t in the squad. In midfield Lucas Bergvall and Conor Gallagher come in for Rodrigo Bentancur and Mateus Fernandes, and Mohammed Kudus starts in place of Omar Marmoush.

Van Hecke starts in the week his wife gave birth to twins; De Zerbi had said he’d weigh “the emotional aspect” before picking him. James Maddison is on the bench after what De Zerbi called a minor setback in training. Dejan Kulusevski travelled with the squad in a support role and isn’t involved. Dominic Solanke captains.

Spurs arrive bottom with two points from five games. United have five from five. We’ve covered why both managers are nervous; the team sheets suggest Carrick trusts his returning players more than De Zerbi trusts his.
