First half: Tielemans and Lammens

United spent the first half without the ball and still went in ahead. Tielemans, playing at ten, set up all three of Mbeumo’s chances: a free header wide on 27 minutes, a shot Trafford saved on 33, and the goal two minutes later, a low left-footed finish into the bottom corner. At the other end Senne Lammens saved from Elvedi, Tanaka and Bogle. Our half-time report has the detail.

Martínez off, Leeds level

Martínez didn’t come out for the second half and Mazraoui replaced him. There was still no official reason at full-time. ESPN’s commentary doesn’t log an injury stoppage for him. NBC’s live blog described him as hobbling with an injury during the first half, but we haven’t found that from a second outlet. The background is here.

Leeds scored on 51 minutes. A corner was knocked down by Tarik Muharemović, who’s credited with the assist, and Calvert-Lewin finished from the middle of the box. Leeds had kept the ball for 45 minutes without scoring, and their first corner of the match was enough.

Mazraoui ended up with the defensive moment of the afternoon. In the last minutes Anton Stach got a shot past Lammens and Mazraoui cleared it off the line. NBC describes the clearance, and ESPN logs Stach’s 91st-minute effort as blocked.

United’s chances to win it

The best of them fell to Bruno Fernandes. On 65 minutes Yoro crossed, and Bruno’s shot from the right of the box went just wide of the far post. Six minutes later Trafford saved his shot from outside the area. Mason Mount came on for Carlos Baleba on 74 minutes and put a shot wide from a corner two minutes later. Matheus Cunha replaced Tielemans on 84 minutes.

Leeds made their changes at the front: Lukas Nmecha for Noah Okafor on 74 and Sean Longstaff for Ao Tanaka on 81. Andrey Santos and Ethan Ampadu were both booked in stoppage time, after Bruno and Gabriel Gudmundsson in the first half.

The numbers

Leeds had 61.3% of the ball over the whole match. United had 13 shots to Leeds’ 12, but Leeds put five on target to United’s three. Lammens made three saves and Trafford two. United won three corners, Leeds two. Leeds committed 16 fouls to United’s five.

For a team that started the day without Shaw, Mainoo and Sesko, a point at a ground where Leeds hadn’t lost since March isn’t a disaster. It still isn’t a win. Six games without one is the number Carrick will be asked about next.

Still to come

No post-match quotes from Carrick or Daniel Farke had been published when this went up, so we don’t yet have the reason for the Martínez change. We’ll cover it when he speaks. Next for United is Como away in the Champions League on Wednesday.
