Graphic saying Benjamin Sesko is out until at least January, per BBC Sport, Standard Sport and The Athletic, with his two goals this season against Everton and Sabah and no game since Brighton on 16 September.

Benjamin Sesko is out until at least January. The BBC, Standard Sport and The Athletic all reported on Wednesday evening that the shin problem that’s kept him out since mid-September won’t clear up before the new year. That leaves Michael Carrick without his only real number nine for the rest of 2026.

There’s no club statement yet. Carrick faces the media on Thursday afternoon, UK time, before Saturday’s trip to Chelsea (8:30 AM ET, 12:30 UK), and Sesko was one of the players the club said he could update on.

What the reports say

The three outlets line up on the headline. Sesko is expected back in the new year at the earliest, and he’ll need time after that to get his sharpness back. Laurie Whitwell wrote in The Athletic, as quoted by The Peoples Person, that he’s “healing well through rest” and that “it is not a chronic issue in any way, but all parties want him to be fully free when he returns so that there is next to no chance of a setback.”

On surgery, the picture is the same from two directions. Standard Sport says an operation is an option for this kind of injury but United don’t want him to have one. The Athletic, via Sports Mole, says no decision has been made and the club are confident it’ll settle with time. So rest is the plan, and the knife is the fallback nobody wants.

The same shin, or not quite?

This is where the reports differ a little. Standard Sport and The Athletic tie it to the injury he picked up against Liverpool at Old Trafford in May, when Ibrahima Konate sent him into the advertising hoardings. That’s the problem that wrecked the end of his first season and kept him out of pre-season.

The BBC’s sources add a detail the others don’t have: they say it isn’t shin splints but an impact injury, “which is not quite the same as the initial problem.” We’d treat that as the BBC’s reporting until United or Carrick explain it.

Where it leaves United

Sesko last played in the Carabao Cup defeat to Brighton on 16 September. Before that he’d scored twice this season, against Everton in the league and Sabah in the Champions League. It’s been a frustrating run of tests and waiting since, and we flagged in our Mainoo update on Wednesday that Carrick was due to talk about him this week.

It’s a hard one to absorb at this moment. Carrick’s only just survived the Bournemouth fallout (he’ll be in charge at Stamford Bridge), and the attack has been the biggest problem. Standard Sport says Matheus Cunha has led the line most often in Sesko’s absence, with Bruno Fernandes also tried as a false nine. Joshua Zirkzee is the other option, but none of them is an orthodox number nine.

The bigger question is January. The BBC says it remains to be seen whether this pushes United into the winter window for a striker, and that’s where it sits: open. Anything beyond that, names or budgets, is rumour for now, and we’re not going to dress it up as news. If Carrick adds anything on Thursday, especially on the nature of the injury or a target date, we’ll have it.
