Kobbie Mainoo Back in Training Before Chelsea, but Is He Ready?

Kobbie Mainoo is back in training. He took part in Wednesday morning’s session at Carrington, the club confirmed on its own site, three days before United go to Stamford Bridge.
It’s the first good news Michael Carrick has had in a while. Whether Mainoo’s ready to play on Saturday is another question, and nobody at the club has answered it yet.

What’s confirmed
Mainoo hasn’t played since the 1-1 draw with Tottenham on 10 October. He’s missed all four games since: AtlĂ©tico Madrid and Como in the Champions League, and Leeds and Bournemouth in the league. United didn’t win any of them, and the midfield missed someone who can take the ball under pressure.
The club calls his return “a significant boost”. The IANS news agency carried the same report from Manchester on Wednesday, and United in Focus says the Mail’s Chris Wheeler reported that Mainoo trained and “could be involved against Chelsea this weekend”.
United haven’t said what the injury was, and they haven’t put a date on a return to matches. That’s the bit to wait for.
What isn’t
One session doesn’t make a player match-fit after nearly three weeks out. The sensible version of this is Mainoo on the bench at Chelsea and minutes off it if there’s no reaction, but that’s our read, not something the club or any reporter has confirmed.
Carrick holds his pre-match press conference on Thursday afternoon, UK time, and the club says he could give updates on Mainoo, Patrick Dorgu, Marcus Rashford, Benjamin Sesko and Luke Shaw. The club didn’t say whether any of the other four trained. Rashford and Shaw were already doubts in last week’s team news.
Why it matters this week
Carrick’s been given Saturday, and not much more. As we covered on Tuesday, he stays for Chelsea without a club statement or a timeline, and United are still looking for a first Premier League win since late August.
A fit Mainoo doesn’t fix that on his own. It does give Carrick a midfielder who’s comfortable receiving on the half-turn, and that’s what’s been missing.
Chelsea’s side of it
Xabi Alonso has already confirmed that Joao Pedro, Chelsea’s leading scorer, will miss the game with a thigh injury. Emiliano MartĂnez and Reece James are out too, per the club’s preview and IANS. Cole Palmer’s suspension only covers Wednesday’s Carabao Cup tie at Liverpool, so he’s available on Saturday.
Chelsea v Manchester United kicks off at 8:30 AM Eastern on Saturday, 31 October (12:30 PM in the UK), per Chelsea’s ticket page and United’s press conference notice.

The same return, absences and Chelsea news from IANS (28 Oct 2026). The Mail’s Chris Wheeler report via United in Focus (Dan Coombs, 28 Oct 2026, 12:15 UK); we couldn’t open the Mail’s own report. The Tottenham date and the list of games missed also from The Peoples Person via Yahoo Sports (28 Oct 2026). Kick-off from ManUtd.com’s press conference notice (27 Oct 2026) and Chelsea FC’s ticket page (undated). Left out because we couldn’t verify it from two sources: the type of injury, any timescale Carrick gave earlier for his recovery, and whether he’s fit to start on Saturday.
