Carrick Stays for Chelsea, but United Still Won’t Say for How Long

Michael Carrick is staying. Manchester United have decided he’ll take the team to Chelsea on Saturday, as BBC Sport, The Athletic, Sky Sports and the Manchester Evening News all reported on Tuesday, and he took training at Carrington that morning as normal.

What nobody has been told is for how long. There’s still no statement from the club, and none of the reports puts a date on the reprieve. It’s a decision, but it isn’t backing.

What was decided

BBC Sport’s Simon Stone reports that Carrick will be in charge at Stamford Bridge and that sources say he’ll get a chance to turn results around. The Athletic’s report, as carried by SPORTbible, says the same: Carrick stays for Chelsea. NBC Sports credits the decision to chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox, the two who held Monday’s talks at Carrington.

The BBC also says the hierarchy had explored replacing him, with Eddie Howe and Julian Nagelsmann considered. That matches what Sky and ESPN reported on Monday, when both men were named as the front-runners.

How long he’s got

This is the part that matters, and it’s the part nobody can answer. SPORTbible says it’s unclear whether Carrick has only the Chelsea game or until the international break. The BBC’s analysis asks whether he survives beyond Chelsea at all, pointing to Roma in the Champions League on Tuesday and Aston Villa after that. NBC’s line is that he’s been given “at least one more game”.

So the honest reading is three games: Chelsea away on Saturday 31 October, Roma at home on 3 November, Villa at home on 8 November. Nothing in the reporting says he gets more than that, and nothing says he gets that many.

Why he’s still here

It may not be faith. Samuel Luckhurst of The Sun, as reported by SPORTbible, says the reason could be the lack of a replacement rather than confidence in Carrick, quoting a source: “the best ones won’t come.” The same report says Howe has started preparing for a possible offer and that United have made no formal approach to Antonio Conte. That’s one outlet’s reporting, so treat it as that.

If it’s right, it fits the last 48 hours. On Sunday night Gary Neville said the decision would come “tomorrow”. On Monday Berrada and Wilcox held talks at Carrington from the morning on, and the club said nothing at all. On Tuesday the answer arrived through the BBC and The Athletic, not through United.

What Carrick has to fix by Saturday

The results first. United are 16th, one point above the relegation zone, and have gone eight games without a win in all competitions by Sky’s, ESPN’s and NBC’s count. Sunday’s 0-3 at home to Bournemouth was the low point.

Then the dressing room. NBC makes the point that he still has to sort things out with Bruno Fernandes, who blamed the staff’s plan after Como and spent all 90 minutes on the bench against Bournemouth, and with Lisandro Martínez, who started that game on the bench too. Whether Bruno starts at Chelsea is now the first thing to watch.

Carrick himself was clear on Sunday that this wasn’t goodbye. “It wasn’t a farewell from me,” he told Sky, as the BBC reported. “The situation is where we are and we haven’t had results or performances that have been good enough.”

Our view

We said on Sunday he should go, and on Monday that the club had to either sack him or back him in public. They’ve kept him without backing him. A head coach told nothing more than “Chelsea, and we’ll see” has no authority with a captain who’s already gone public against him, and the players know exactly how long his leash is.

If United really believe in Carrick, they should say so and give him until the international break at least. If they don’t, they’ve just made Stamford Bridge an audition with the whole country watching. Either way, Saturday is now about him as much as the team.
