The Bruno Limping Video: What It Shows, What Carrick Said, and What United Would Lose on Sunday

A fan’s phone video of Bruno Fernandes walking out of Old Trafford on Thursday night, moving gingerly and alongside the club doctor, went round overnight and became the question of derby week. Here is what the clip shows, what Carrick said on Friday, and what United would be missing on Sunday if it’s more than a stiff walk to the car. For the fixture itself, the full history of the derby, 1881 to number 199, is here.
Watch first: our TikTok on the Bruno video and the derby question, then read on for what we found.
The short version: he played every minute against Sabah, scored, the club named no injury, and he starts the derby. Carrick’s answer to the workload question was about substitutions, not fitness.
What the video shows
The clip was filmed by a supporter in the tunnel area after the 4-0 and posted with the hashtags #brunofernandes and #theeyetest. It shows Fernandes leaving the stadium with a noticeable limp, waving to fans as he goes, with the club doctor beside him. That’s the whole of it. There is no incident on the pitch to match it to: he played the full 90, scored the second goal on 42 minutes from a Tielemans pass, and finished the game.
Anyone who has watched him for six seasons knows the walk. He has played through knocks before and looked worse than this leaving grounds he’d just won at. But the derby is three days away, so the walk became the story.
How real is it? We went looking
Every report we could find on Friday traces back to the same clip. Goal, Yahoo, AOL, SportBible, utdreport and the aggregator sites all describe the one fan video and add nothing to it: no named journalist, no club source, no diagnosis. SportBible’s version is the most honest about that, calling it “a slight limp” and noting he “took more than a few knocks from opponents” during the game. Roundtable’s injury tracker says plainly that “no update on Fernandes has been given” and lists him as expected to play.
What doesn’t exist matters too. The club has issued nothing. No reporter with access to Carrington has reported an injury. United hadn’t published Friday training pictures by the afternoon, so the one piece of evidence that would settle it either way isn’t public yet; City’s were, and they show O’Reilly back. Until a team sheet or a training gallery says otherwise, this is a walk to the car and a hashtag.
What Carrick said
The question put to him on Friday was about the load, not the limp: how hard is it to take Bruno off when he plays every minute of every game? His answer, in full: “We only had five subs, so we had to make certain decisions on what that looked like. Of course he’s like anybody else. He has played an awful lot, but I think we’re developing the group and the squad to be able to accommodate that in different ways, you know. Tonight was just one of those things. There was decisions to be made and he ended up staying on.”
GiveMeSport, reporting the same press conference, says Carrick assured reporters that Fernandes was fine. He is not on the club’s team-news absentee list for Sunday, which names Amad, Baleba, Ugarte and de Ligt as out and Luke Shaw as a doubt. Rashford, who didn’t play on Thursday, was rested “to keep Marcus fresh and ready for the weekend.”
Read together, that’s a manager describing a player who was fit enough to be left on when he had five subs to use and chose to use them elsewhere.
The load is real, though
“He has played an awful lot” is not a throwaway line. Fernandes has played every minute of United’s season so far: four league games and the Champions League opener, 450 minutes in five games. Last season he played 35 league games and 3,066 minutes, and then went to the World Cup and started five games for Portugal. He turned 32 on Tuesday.
Carrick has rotated almost everybody else. Rashford and Shaw were rested on Thursday, Maguire and Dalot sat on the bench, Tielemans came off at half-time, Mainoo and Sesko at 64. The one man who didn’t come off is the one now being asked about, and the honest answer is that the squad hasn’t yet got a version of itself that works without him. Mount got 45 minutes on Thursday. That’s the closest thing to a plan.
What United would lose on Sunday
United’s own derby programme puts the number on it: seven goal involvements in his last ten games against City, and it would be eight but for the Community Shield strike in 2024 ruled out for offside. He scored in Maresca’s last visit to Old Trafford, the 2-1 over Chelsea a year ago this month. He has four goals this season, the hat-trick against Ipswich and Thursday’s, and he leads United on league goal involvements with four, level with City’s Rayan Cherki.
Without him the shape changes, not just the numbers. The XI we want on Sunday has him at ten; Mount is the obvious alternative, and he has 45 minutes this season. Cunha can drop in from the left, which pushes Rashford or Dorgu wide and asks Sesko to hold the ball up alone against Dias and Guehi. Every one of those is a worse version of the plan than Fernandes between the lines with Mbeumo running off him.
What we’d expect
He starts. A player left on for 90 minutes on Thursday, with no injury named on Friday and a manager talking about squad-building rather than treatment, is not a player being hidden. The video is a walk, and a walk after 90 minutes at 32 looks like that. If the club had a concern, Shaw shows how it says so: “we’ll have to see.” It didn’t say that about Bruno.
The line-ups land at 10:30 AM Eastern on Sunday. Thursday’s report has the game the video came from, and the derby is on Peacock and NBCSN at 11:30 AM Eastern.
