Coach Raul Alonzo has passed away. He coached at Premier Futbol Academy in San Antonio, and he was a friend of mine. More than anything else, he was a good man.

I wanted him remembered here, on my own site, in a few plain words.

What he gave

The videos shared since he died say more than I can. Raul in the middle of a huddle, leaning down to talk to his young players. Raul on stage, waving. Raul laughing with his team under a “Let’s Play!” sign. The kids are never far from him.

One tribute posted online put it better than anyone:

“Thank you for loving our girls like your own. Thank you for believing in them. And thank you for giving them memories and lessons that will stay with them for a lifetime. Once their coach, forever part of our family.”

That’s what a youth coach is at his best. He isn’t only teaching kids how to pass and defend. He’s someone who shows up for them every week and believes in them before they believe in themselves.

The club he coached for

Premier Futbol Academy is a not-for-profit youth club in San Antonio. Its own website says “a good club creates a good community” and that it builds “humans with purpose, integrity, and resilience.” Clubs only live up to words like that because of coaches like Raul.

Tell them while you can

If a coach made a difference to you or your kids, tell them. Send the message. Say thank you at the next practice. Life is short, and the people who give their evenings and weekends to other people’s children rarely hear how much it meant.

My thoughts are with his family, his players and their families, and everyone at Premier Futbol Academy.

Rest easy, Coach.
