How United Lost in Wroclaw: A Wing-Back, a Missed Penalty and Three Goals in Fourteen Minutes

We spent last week writing that this game would be decided in the channels either side of the wing-backs. It was. We just had the direction wrong.
Manchester United lost 4-2 to AC Milan in Wroclaw, led twice, and then conceded three goals in fourteen minutes to a side that hadn’t won a match all summer. Here is what actually happened, beyond the scoreline.
The shape of it
United (4-2-3-1): Lammens; Shaw, Heaven, Maguire, Mazraoui; Tielemans, Santos; Amad, Fernandes, Dorgu; Cunha.
Milan (3-4-2-1): Torriani; Terracciano, De Winter, Pavlovic; Chukwueze, Jashari, Musah, Estupinan; Loftus-Cheek, Cisse; Ramos.
Two things stand out before a ball is kicked. Leny Yoro and Diogo Dalot both started on the bench, so the back four was Shaw, nineteen-year-old Ayden Heaven, Maguire and Mazraoui. And Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans started together in central midfield for the first time.
The goals: Maguire on 2 from a Fernandes corner, Chukwueze on 37, Dorgu on 51 after a sloppy Terracciano back-pass, Cisse on 57, Ramos on 68, Loftus-Cheek on 71. Fernandes had a penalty saved on 41.
Samuel Chukwueze was the game
One goal, two assists, man of the match, and he did it from right wing-back.
Which means he spent the afternoon attacking United’s left. Luke Shaw’s side. Patrick Dorgu’s side.
Go through Milan’s four goals and three of them come from that flank. Chukwueze scored the equaliser himself on 37. He created Cisse’s goal on 57, the one where Cisse ghosted in at the far post. He crossed for Ramos to head the third on 68. Then Loftus-Cheek raced down the right to finish it on 71.
In the preview we wrote that a 3-4-2-1 defends the middle superbly and concedes the space either side of the wing-backs, and that United were set up to attack exactly that with Amad, Dorgu, Dalot and Shaw. The read on where the game would be won was right. What we didn’t account for is that the channel cuts both ways, and that Milan’s wing-back would be the best player on the pitch in it.
That’s the tactical lesson from Wroclaw. Against a back three, the wide areas are the battleground. Win them and you win the game. United didn’t win them.
The numbers are worse than 4-2
- Possession: United 39%, Milan 61%
- Shots: United 10, Milan 13
- On target: United 6, Milan 9
- Corners: United 4, Milan 2
Thirty-nine percent of the ball against a Milan side who had drawn with Celtic, drawn with Inter and lost 3-0 to Chelsea. United scored twice and had six shots on target, so this wasn’t a total non-event going forward. But being outshot and outpossessed that heavily is the part Carrick will be looking at.
So the midfield pairing finally happened
We have asked this question in four straight articles, so we’re obliged to answer it honestly now that we have data.
Santos and Tielemans started together. They played more than an hour together. And United had thirty-nine percent of the ball and conceded four.
Before anyone draws a conclusion from that, two caveats that genuinely matter. This was the first time the two had ever been on the pitch together, in any match, at any point. Partnerships in central midfield are built on hundreds of repetitions, and they have had none. And Milan’s 3-4-2-1 puts two tens directly in the space between a midfield two and a back four, which is the single hardest problem you can set a double pivot.
Mason Mount, who would ordinarily do a chunk of that screening work, is a doubt with a foot problem. Manuel Ugarte is out until spring. So the pairing got its hardest possible first test with no cover behind it.
It’s not evidence that they can’t play together. It’s evidence that they have a lot of work to do in six days.
The penalty was the game’s hinge
Easy to skip past in a 4-2, but look at the sequence.
Maguire scores on 2. Chukwueze equalises on 37. Fernandes has a penalty on 41 and it’s well saved. Half-time, 1-1.
Score that and United go in 2-1 up, Milan spend the second half chasing a game rather than turning one, and Amorim’s side don’t get the platform to score three in fourteen minutes. Pre-season friendlies are not decided by momentum the way real matches are, but a two-goal half-time lead changes what both managers do with their substitutions.
Heaven had a hard afternoon, and that’s fine
Ayden Heaven is nineteen. He started at centre-back next to Maguire with Yoro on the bench, and Milan’s front three of Ramos, Cisse and Loftus-Cheek is a genuinely awkward set of movements to defend, with two of them arriving from deep into the space in front of him.
He was also the player caught out for the Cisse goal, with Cisse arriving unmarked at the far post. That’s a communication error as much as an individual one, and it involves the whole back four.
The counter-argument, and it’s a decent one: he is a teenager getting exactly the kind of chastening evening that builds a defender, in a match that costs nothing. Better this than the MKM Stadium next Saturday.
Rashford got his thirty minutes
He came on in the 61st minute for his first Manchester United appearance in twenty months, against the manager who froze him out. Sky’s report notes the introduction and little else, which tells you roughly how the last half hour went for United generally.
No goal, no defining moment, and it doesn’t matter. Carrick said this week that he is just like any other player, and thirty minutes of ordinary football in a friendly is exactly what a player twenty months out of the side needs. The story was that he played at all.
Carrick didn’t dress it up
“We’re disappointed with it. We didn’t play well today. No excuses. We didn’t play very well.”
He also said the squad is ready for next week. Both of those things can be true, and the flat honesty of the first part is more reassuring than a manager explaining away a four-goal concession in August.
What it means, and what it doesn’t
Pre-season finishes at two wins, two draws and two defeats. United beat Rosenborg and Atletico Madrid, drew with PSG and Leeds, and lost to Wrexham and Milan.
The thing not to do is panic about a friendly scoreline in the week Amorim was always going to be the story. The thing to take seriously is the pattern: fifty goals conceded last season, four conceded here, and a back four that got pulled apart down one side by a wing-back.
Hull City away on Saturday. Newly promoted, at their place, 12:30 kick-off. If Yoro and Dalot come back into that defence and Mount is fit to screen in front of it, this looks like an afternoon in Poland that cost nothing. If they don’t, the questions from Wroclaw arrive a week early.
