United have a new sleeve sponsor. The club confirmed on Tuesday that SumUp, the fintech company, is now the Official Sleeve Partner across the men’s, women’s and academy teams, in a multi-year deal reported at more than £20 million a season, a club record for that specific spot on the shirt. It’s the first thing fans will notice when the team walks out for Thursday’s Champions League opener against Sabah.
What the deal actually covers
The SumUp logo goes on the sleeve of every kit, home and away, for every competition, not just the Premier League. That includes the women’s side and the academy too, which is the usual scope for these deals now but still worth spelling out given how much money is attached. United say a co-branded payment card is coming as part of the arrangement, offering supporters discounts and rewards both at club outlets and at other UK businesses that use SumUp’s payment terminals. It’s a genuinely commercial partnership rather than just a logo swap, which tracks with how SumUp has positioned itself as it’s grown.
Filling the DXC gap
United had gone without a sleeve sponsor since DXC Technology’s four year run ended over the summer. That’s an unusually long gap to leave that space blank on the shirt, and it says something about how selective the commercial side has been about who fills it, or how long the negotiation took. Either way, the wait produced a record number, and Marc Armstrong, the club’s chief business officer, put it plainly: SumUp is a rapidly growing business and United see this as reflecting the pulling power the club still has for brands trying to reach a global audience.
Why the timing isn’t an accident
Thursday’s Sabah match is United’s first Champions League appearance in nearly three years, and it’s also a full house at Old Trafford with cameras from every broadcaster carrying the competition. Debuting a record sponsorship deal on a night like that instead of a routine Premier League Saturday is a deliberate choice, and it fits a pattern: the training kit deal with Betway landed at the start of this season too. The commercial side of the club is clearly trying to time announcements for maximum eyeballs, and a Champions League return after this long a wait is about as big a stage as United have available right now.
