One Day Left. Manchester United Have Three Jobs to Do.

Checklist graphic for Manchester United on the last day of the 2026 transfer window: sign a left-back, only sell Zirkzee afterwards, keep Amass and Leon, and the two deadlines of 11pm Tuesday plus the UEFA squad list on Wednesday.

The window shuts at 11pm on Tuesday. Manchester United have one full working day left, and their manager has spent the weekend saying publicly that the squad isn’t finished.

As of this writing, 3pm in Manchester on Monday afternoon, there are just under 32 hours left in the window. Two of United’s three outstanding jobs can still be done in that time. The third only works if they’re done in the right order.

Michael Carrick told reporters he wants and needs more signings before the deadline, and Fabrizio Romano’s reading is that he’s pushing privately for at least one more player and possibly two. That’s a manager who has just won 5-2 telling his board the job isn’t done. There are three things United have to get right before Tuesday night, and one of them is about what they don’t do.

1. Sign the left-back, and stop pretending it’s optional

The Lewis Hall pursuit is over. Newcastle made him unavailable rather than expensive, United have accepted a deal isn’t feasible this summer, and the reporting now says they’ll return for him in 2027.

What replaces it is a short-term signing. David Raum at Leipzig, Antonee Robinson at Fulham and Jorge Salinas at Racing Santander are the three names in circulation, and the brief has shifted to somebody cheap or young who can cover Shaw this season rather than replace him.

That is the right call and it should have been made in July. We made the full case yesterday: Shaw is the only senior left-back at the club, Hull scored twice from set pieces, and Ipswich’s opener came down Shaw’s side when Abdul Fatawu beat him and crossed for Leif Davis. Four goals conceded in two games isn’t a small sample that happens to look bad. It’s the only sample there is.

2. Resolve Zirkzee, but not before the left-back lands

Joshua Zirkzee is in talks with Juventus. United would prefer a straight sale or a loan with an obligation to buy, having paid £36.5m for him two years ago, and a fee around £34m has been reported.

Selling him is defensible. Getting most of your money back on a forward who hasn’t held down a starting place is good business, and the wage saving is real.

The sequencing is the problem. Amad Diallo is out with ankle ligament damage and has no return date. Benjamin Šeško hasn’t started a Premier League game yet. Take Zirkzee out today and the forward line for nine games in 35 days is Cunha, Mbeumo, Rashford and Šeško, with nothing behind them. United have already spent this window learning what one injury does to a position with no cover. Doing it twice in the same fortnight would be a choice, not bad luck.

Sell him if the left-back arrives first. Keep him if it doesn’t.

3. Don’t sell the cover you already have

This is the one that could quietly go wrong on Tuesday.

United have been willing to let Harry Amass go for around £6m to £8m, and they’ve decided Diego León is better served on loan than playing under-21 football. Both are 19, both are left-backs, and both are the only players at the club besides Shaw who actually play there.

If a senior left-back signs, moving one of them on is sensible squad management. If nobody signs, letting either leave takes United from thin to nothing, and the fallback becomes Diogo Dalot switching flanks or Lisandro Martínez leaving the middle. Patrick Dorgu can fill in, but he isn’t a left-back and Carrick doesn’t use him as one.

The order matters more than the decisions. Nothing goes out until something comes in.

Rashford is staying, and that’s settled

Marcus Rashford will be a United player on Wednesday. Fenerbahce were reported to have prepared a bid worth around £21.4m and Rashford’s position was firm that he wasn’t going to Turkey.

He wears the 9, he started against Ipswich, and Carrick called him “massively in contention” last week. The question that dominated August is closed, which frees the last day to be about the squad’s actual hole rather than its most-discussed player.

Two dates that change what’s still possible

The deadline itself has slack in it. Clubs that submit a deal sheet before 11pm get a two-hour grace period to complete the paperwork, so a deal agreed at 10:45pm can still be finished at half past midnight. Late does not mean impossible.

The more useful date is the one after it. UEFA’s List A registration deadline for the Champions League league phase is 11:59pm CET on Wednesday 2 September, a full day after the window closes. Anyone signed on Tuesday night can still be registered for Europe, so a late left-back would be available for the opener against Sabah on 10 September rather than watching the league phase from outside the squad.

That removes the last excuse for waiting. A deadline-day signing isn’t a player you can only use in the league, and it isn’t a player who misses the first month of the Champions League. He can play in everything.

What good looks like on Tuesday night

One left-back in, on a loan or a modest fee, registered in time for Sabah. Zirkzee either sold at a sensible price after that signing lands or kept until January. Amass and León both still at the club unless a senior body has arrived to replace them.

United have spent more than £150m this summer on Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans and Carlos Baleba, and the midfield is better for it. They’ve signed no defenders. Their manager has now said out loud that he needs more. There’s one day left to agree with him.

Update, deadline day: Raum has said he expects to stay at Leipzig and Zirkzee turned down Fiorentina, who signed Beto instead. United’s left-back search now rests on a single £13.7m release clause: United Have 17 Hours and One Number Left.
