Graphic: Michael Carrick and Bruno Fernandes held clear-the-air talks at Carrington and Bruno is expected to start at Chelsea on Saturday

Michael Carrick and Bruno Fernandes have talked it out. The two spoke privately at Carrington on Tuesday, as BBC Sport, Sky Sports and the Guardian all reported on Wednesday, and Carrick is satisfied the bad feeling between them is over. The captain is expected back at Chelsea on Saturday.

That’s the most important thing to happen at United this week, more than the board’s decision to keep Carrick. A head coach on a short leash can’t afford a fight with his best player, and his best player can’t afford to sit on the bench during a relegation scrap.

What happened on Tuesday

BBC Sport’s Simon Stone reports that the pair spoke privately at the training ground on Tuesday, though it isn’t known who asked for the meeting. Sky’s Danyal Khan and Rob Dorsett say Carrick came out of it satisfied that the animosity is over. The Guardian’s Jamie Jackson reports that Fernandes gave Carrick assurances he’s fully committed to turning the season around.

Then the whole squad met. Sky says players and staff admitted everyone has underperformed this season and agreed things have to improve straight away. The Guardian says the rest of the players made the same commitment Fernandes did.

On the same day, Carrick, Fernandes and several other players signed autographs and posed for photos with a group of fans invited to Carrington, as the BBC reported on Tuesday night. Whatever was said in private, they were side by side in public.

What nobody knows yet

Whether Bruno apologised. Sky says it isn’t known if he said sorry for his public criticism, and neither the BBC nor the Guardian reports an apology. Fans should remember that before declaring the whole thing fixed.

It’s a fair question, because this started in public. After the 4-1 at Como, Fernandes told TNT it was “a decision from the staff to not press man-to-man” and “that’s on the manager and on the staff to see it, it’s not on me.” Carrick then left him out against Bournemouth, calling it a “pure football” decision, and didn’t bring him on as United lost 3-0. After that game Fernandes liked an Instagram post that read “Never push a loyal person to the point where they no longer care”, as Futbol Chronicle, The Peoples Person and All Out Soccer all reported.

The captaincy hasn’t changed either. Sky reported on 22 October that Fernandes would keep the armband, while Carrick refused to rule out disciplinary action. None of Wednesday’s reports mention a fresh decision, and the Guardian still calls him the captain.

Bruno is back for Chelsea

The Guardian says Fernandes is expected to start at Stamford Bridge. Sky says he’s in contention and, according to Khan, has been back to his best in training over the last 48 hours. The BBC says he could return to the starting line-up.

The BBC also reports that Kobbie Mainoo is back in training after about two weeks out. That’s one outlet’s report so far, so we’ll wait for Carrick’s press conference before counting on him for Saturday.

Our view

This is the right outcome, and it’s the first thing all week that looks like a club being run properly. The board kept Carrick without backing him in public. At least the head coach and the captain have done the grown-up thing themselves.

Carrick made his point by dropping him. Bruno has had a week to think about what he said. Now United are 16th, going to Chelsea, who are fifth, with Roma and Villa to follow, and they need their best player on the pitch. Start him, keep the armband on him, and judge them both on Saturday.
