Bruno Fernandes sat out Portugal’s win in Norway on Sunday with an injury that Jorge Jesus says he brought from United and has been playing through for about three games. Nobody has named the injury. An earlier version of this post called it a hip injury; that word came from an English-language report and isn’t in what Jesus said or in the Portuguese coverage, so it’s been removed. The details are on the source line.
What Jesus said
At his press conference on Saturday 26 September, Jesus said, in our translation from Record’s transcript: “He’s come with an injury from United and, he told me, he’s been playing with that pain for about three games.” He called it one of the reasons Bruno didn’t play at his level against Wales, and said he’d rather not risk him so he’d be fit for Denmark.
Bruno was left off the 23-man list for Norway, and Portugal won 2-1 in Oslo without him. He stays with the squad for Denmark on Thursday 1 October and Norway again on Sunday 4 October.
Where the problem started
ESPN’s sources say he’s been managing it since the 4-0 win over Sabah on 10 September, and that he passed late fitness tests before the derby and the Fulham game. The Peoples Person, citing the Manchester Evening News, reports United contacted the Portugal camp about his fitness and the decision was that he stays.
That’s the night a fan clip showed him walking gingerly out of Old Trafford beside the club doctor. He played the whole derby and the whole Fulham game after it.
What it means for United
United don’t play again until Tottenham at Old Trafford on Saturday 10 October, then AtlĂ©tico Madrid away on the 13th and Leeds away on the 18th. If Bruno plays both remaining Portugal games, he comes back six days before Spurs having played through the problem for a month. The thing to watch is Thursday: whether he starts against Denmark, and whether he finishes.

Correction, 30 September 2026: this post was published on 27 September under the headline “Bruno Fernandes Ruled Out of Portugal Duty With Worrying Hip Injury” and described the problem as a hip injury and as “complicated”. Neither word appears in Record’s transcript of Jorge Jesus’s press conference or in A Bola’s report; “hip” came from The Peoples Person’s account and “complicated” from Goal’s translation. No body part has been named by the club or the federation. The post has been rewritten and the headline changed. Sources: Jorge Jesus’s press conference of 26 September 2026 from Record’s transcript (our translation), with the same comments reported by Mais Futebol; Bruno’s omission from the 23-man list for Norway from Mais Futebol, Record and A Bola, 27 September; Norway 1-2 Portugal from ESPN, Al Jazeera and FOX Sports, 27 September; the issue dating from the Sabah game and the late fitness tests from ESPN (Rob Dawson), 28 September; United’s contact with the Portugal camp from The Peoples Person citing the Manchester Evening News, 28 September. No diagnosis or return date has been published and none is stated here.
