Marcus Rashford and Manchester United: 14 goals at Barcelona, the closed door in Catalonia, and the unresolved shirt number

Marcus Rashford left Manchester United on loan in early 2025 with his future at the club apparently settled, spent a season winning La Liga at Barcelona, and walked back into Carrington in August 2026 as a Manchester United player again. This is the whole story in one place: how the exit happened, what he actually did in Spain, why he came back, where he fits under Michael Carrick, and the squad-number question that still isn’t closed.

The short version

He’s 28. He is contracted to Manchester United. He trained with the first-team squad in August 2026 for the first time in 18 months. The manager has said in public that he is part of the squad. Barcelona, where he was excellent, closed the door by signing somebody else. Nothing about his situation is settled beyond the fact that he is here.

How he ended up leaving

Rashford is an academy player who made his senior debut in February 2016 and scored twice in it. Michael Carrick was club captain that night. That detail matters more now than it did then.

By the end of 2024 the relationship with the club had broken down badly enough that a loan was the only sensible outcome for both sides. He spent the second half of 2024/25 away, and then a full season on loan at Barcelona in 2025/26. Two loan spells across 18 months, and by the summer of 2026 the widespread assumption was that he would not be a United player again.

We argued against that assumption before the club made its decision, in the case for Marcus Rashford. The argument then was that a player producing at his level in a title-winning side is not somebody you give away for nothing, whatever happened two years earlier.

What he actually did at Barcelona

This is the part that changed the conversation, and the numbers deserve to be precise.

14 goals and 10 assists in a Barcelona side that won La Liga under Hansi Flick. That’s not a player rebuilding his reputation on the margins of a good team. That is a productive season as a contributor to a title.

He then went to the World Cup and finished third with England, after which United granted him an extended rest period. That’s why he arrived back at Carrington later than the rest of the squad, and why he was not involved in the earlier pre-season matches.

Why Barcelona didn’t keep him

Not because of anything he did. Barcelona spent £70m on Anthony Gordon from Newcastle, and a squad that has just paid that for a forward in his position does not also have room for a returning loanee. The path back to Catalonia closed for reasons that were financial and structural rather than a judgement on his season.

So he came back to a club that had, in the meantime, changed manager.

The Carrick factor

The single most important thing about Rashford’s return is who is now in charge.

Carrick spent six years coaching Rashford on United’s staff. He was club captain when Rashford made his debut. Whatever the last regime’s view of him was, the current manager has a decade of first-hand context, which is a very different starting position from a new arrival reading a file.

Carrick settled it publicly in August with three words. We wrote it up as “He’s our player,” and how United will use him. It wasn’t effusive and it wasn’t a promise of starts. It was a manager declining to treat a contracted player as a problem to be solved, which after 18 months of speculation was the news.

The return, and the number

He rejoined the group at Carrington in August and travelled with the squad to Dublin, though he did not feature against Leeds at Croke Park. We covered the return to training and what the number 14 said about his standing.

The number then changed twice more. He wore the 9 in pre-season, had no number at all on media day, and took the 9 officially when United filed their squad list on 22 August. Why that shirt went to a winger rather than to Benjamin Sesko is the more interesting question.

The 14 was the reported number, and the logic was sound. It came free when Christian Eriksen left in 2025. He wore 14 at Barcelona. The 10 he had for seven years belongs to Matheus Cunha now and is not coming back.

Then he ran out against AC Milan in Wroclaw wearing 9.

United addressed it directly. Their position is that squad numbers worn in pre-season are provisional and yet to be finalised, with the definitive list published in the week before the Hull City opener. That’s not a club covering for a change of heart, it’s how pre-season works: friendly kits get printed before squad lists are registered, and players who arrive late get handed whatever is spare. He came back into the group three days before that match.

We went through the whole thing in why he wore nine, not fourteen. One note on our own record: when we wrote about the 14 we said the club had not published an official list and to treat it as likely rather than confirmed. That caution turned out to be right, and the earlier piece stands as written rather than being quietly edited.

If it does end up being 9, that would be his fourth United number after 39, 19 and 10, and it would say something slightly different about how Carrick sees him, because 9 is a centre-forward’s shirt.

Where he fits in this squad

The relevant context is what United have up front and in wide areas after a thin window.

Benjamin Sesko is the senior centre-forward. Rasmus Hojlund’s loan to Napoli was made permanent for £44m, and Joshua Zirkzee’s exit is understood to be close, with United looking at a replacement to give Sesko competition. Bryan Mbeumo has been the most reliable finisher of pre-season. Amad Diallo is the one who wins the ball high.

That squad has room for Rashford in a way it did not eighteen months ago, and the reasons are arithmetic rather than sentimental. A club carrying one senior striker and shopping for another has an obvious use for a forward who scored 14 and made 10 last season. The full picture of what United did and did not sign is in the 2026 transfer window record.

The honest uncertainty

Three things are genuinely unresolved and pretending otherwise would be dishonest.

Whether he starts. “He’s our player” is a statement about squad membership, not about the eleven. Carrick has not promised anything beyond a fair look.

Whether he stays past this window. The deadline is 1 September. Reporting through the summer had other clubs interested, and a productive Barcelona season raised rather than lowered his market.

Which number he ends up with. The official list settles this in the week before Hull, and it is the one item here with a fixed answer arriving on a known date.

What to watch

United open away at Hull City on Saturday 22 August, 12:30 UK and 7:30 in the morning Eastern. Whether Rashford is in the squad, whether he starts, and what is printed on his back are all answered that morning.

Everything on Carrick’s team selection and tactical approach is in the running record of his time in charge. Full fixtures with US Eastern kick-off times are on the schedule page.

The timeline

10 August 2026. Returns to Carrington. First training with United in 18 months. Travels to Dublin but does not play against Leeds.

13 August 2026. Carrick: “He’s our player.”

15 August 2026. Plays against AC Milan in Wroclaw wearing 9, not the widely reported 14.

Week of 17 August 2026. Official squad numbers published.

22 August 2026. Season opens at Hull City.

Common questions

Is Marcus Rashford still a Manchester United player?

Yes. He’s under contract, returned to training in August 2026, and Michael Carrick has confirmed publicly that he’s part of the squad.

What number does Marcus Rashford wear?

Unresolved as of mid-August. He was widely reported to be taking 14, which came free when Christian Eriksen left in 2025 and which he wore at Barcelona, but he played against AC Milan in 9. United say pre-season numbers are provisional and the definitive list is published in the week before the Hull City opener.

How did Marcus Rashford do at Barcelona?

14 goals and 10 assists, and Barcelona won La Liga under Hansi Flick.

Why did Rashford leave Barcelona?

Barcelona signed Anthony Gordon from Newcastle for £70m, which removed the room for a returning loanee in his position. It was a squad-building decision rather than a verdict on his season.

Why didn’t Rashford play in most of pre-season?

He was granted an extended rest period after finishing third with England at the 2026 World Cup, and rejoined the squad three days before the AC Milan match.

Will Rashford start against Hull City?

Unknown. Carrick has committed to him being in the squad and nothing further. He hadn’t trained with United for 18 months before August, so a gradual reintegration would be the unsurprising outcome.
