Rashford Wore Nine, Not Fourteen. The Bigger Number Is Sixteen Days.

Marcus Rashford ran out at the Tarczynski Arena on Saturday wearing the number 9. Everybody had spent a week being told he was taking the 14.
So what happened, and does it matter? The short answers are “nothing sinister” and “less than the thing nobody is talking about”, which is that we’re sixteen days from the window shutting and this squad still has two holes in it.
Why he wore nine
United have addressed it directly. Their line is that squad numbers worn in pre-season are provisional and yet to be finalised, and that the definitive list gets announced in the week before the Hull City game on 22 August.
That’s not a club covering for a change of heart. It’s how pre-season actually works. Friendly kits get printed before squad lists are registered, players who arrive late get handed whatever is spare, and nothing becomes official until the Premier League list is filed. Rashford came back into the group three days before that match. Somebody handed him a shirt.
He is still expected to end up with the 14, which became free when Christian Eriksen left in 2025 and which he wore at Barcelona last season. The 10 he wore for seven years belongs to Matheus Cunha now and isn’t coming back. The 9 is genuinely unclaimed, so it’s not impossible, but the reporting still points at 14.
One thing for anyone who read our piece on the number 14 last week: we said at the time that the club hadn’t published an official squad list, that one squad-number tracker still had his slot blank, and to treat it as very likely rather than stamped. That caution turned out to be the right call. Saturday is exactly the sort of thing that happens when a story runs ahead of an announcement.
If it does end up being 9, incidentally, that would be his fourth United number after 39, 19 and 10. And it would say something slightly different about how Carrick sees him, because 9 is a centre-forward’s shirt.
Now the part that actually matters
Here is United’s summer, in full.
In: Andrey Santos from Chelsea for around £50 million. Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa for £35 million. Karl Darlow on a free. Tynan Thompson from Tottenham for an initial £4 million. Cristian Orozco, a Colombian teenager.
Out: Casemiro on a free. Rasmus Hojlund to Napoli. Altay Bayindir to Celta Vigo on loan. Vitek to Middlesbrough.
Two senior first-team signings. That’s the window so far, with sixteen days left.
Now, £85 million on two midfielders isn’t nothing, and both look like good players. Santos completed 35 of 37 passes against PSG. Tielemans put Bruno Fernandes through inside two minutes of coming on. The problem isn’t the quality of what arrived. It’s the quantity against what left and what was already missing.
Left-back is a hole, and Saturday proved it
Luke Shaw is 31 and out of contract in June 2027. Behind him there’s nobody. Patrick Dorgu was signed as a wing-back and the club now views him as an attacking player. Harry Amass and Diego Leon are 19.
Then look at what happened in Wroclaw.
Samuel Chukwueze played right wing-back for Milan, which meant he spent the afternoon attacking United’s left. He finished with one goal and two assists and was man of the match. Three of Milan’s four goals came down that side: he scored the equaliser on 37, created Cisse’s goal on 57, crossed for Ramos on 68, and then Loftus-Cheek raced down the same flank for the fourth on 71.
Some of that’s collective. A wing-back getting that much room is a problem for the winger in front of him and the centre-back inside him as much as the full-back. Dorgu isn’t a natural defender and it showed. But when the same flank gets opened four times in an afternoon, and the man there’s 31 with a long injury history and one year left, you have identified your priority.
We have already written about Arsenal offering Myles Lewis-Skelly around, and the reporting then was that United weren’t pursuing him. Lewis Hall at Newcastle is the name the club has actually circled, and Newcastle have no reason to sell. Neither of those is a solved problem.
And another midfielder, whatever the signings suggest
This is the bit that gets waved away because United spent £85 million there. Count the bodies instead.
Casemiro left. Manuel Ugarte is out until spring with the ACL injury from the World Cup. Mason Mount is a doubt with the foot problem from the PSG game. That’s three senior midfielders unavailable or gone.
In are Santos and Tielemans. Kobbie Mainoo is back and needs minutes. Behind them it’s Toby Collyer and Daniel Gore, both of whom have reportedly been told their route to football is through the under-21s, and the Fletcher brothers.
So for a season with 38 league games, a Champions League campaign and two cups, United have three fit senior central midfielders. One injury and Carrick is picking a teenager at Anfield.
The links are there. Aurelien Tchouameni at Real Madrid is understood to be a target, with Manu Kone and Carlos Baleba also mentioned. Whether any of that becomes real in sixteen days is another matter.
The honest read
United finished third last season and got back into the Champions League, so this isn’t a squad in crisis. Carrick has done a genuinely good job and the mood around the club is better than it has been in years.
But third place last season came with fifty goals conceded, and the defence has been strengthened by nobody. The midfield has been rebuilt in quality and thinned in depth at the same time. And the one position everyone could see was a problem in June is still a problem in the middle of August.
The window shuts at 11pm on Tuesday 1 September. Hull City away comes first, on Saturday. If United get through the opening weeks without an injury to Shaw or one of the midfield two, none of this will feel urgent. If they don’t, it will feel like the most predictable problem of the season.
