Graphic of Manchester United's 2026/27 squad lists: 23 of 25 Premier League places used, 64 Under-21 players registered, 58 of them at the club which is the most in the league, and a 25-man Champions League list including Ayden Heaven and Tynan Thompson.

Two squad lists went in this week and the headlines found the same absentee in both. Kobbie Mainoo isn’t on United’s Premier League list. Leny Yoro isn’t either. The word doing the rounds is “glaring”. It’s the wrong word. United registered 23 senior players instead of 25, and the reason is the best thing in either document: the club has so many players young enough not to need registering that it left two seats empty on purpose.

The rule, and the number the league got wrong on its own page

A Premier League squad list holds up to 25 players, no more than 17 of them non-homegrown. Homegrown means three seasons registered with an English or Welsh club before turning 21, nationality irrelevant. Under-21 players sit outside the 25 altogether and are eligible regardless, which is why a club with a good academy never fills the list.

The cut-off matters here, so here it is exactly. United’s own statement says the Under-21 group is “those born on or after 1 January 2005”. The league’s official squad-lists page says 1 January 2007 in its footer, then lists Mainoo (born April 2005) and Yoro (November 2005) in United’s Under-21 column a few inches above. Last season’s cut-off was 2004. The footer is a typo. The list is the list, and both of them are on it.

The 23

Goalkeepers: Lammens, Heaton, Darlow, Mee. Defenders: Dalot, Mazraoui, Maguire, De Ligt, MartĂnez, Shaw, Dorgu. Midfield: Fernandes, Tielemans, Santos, Baleba, Mount, Ugarte. Forwards: Mbeumo, Cunha, Sesko, Rashford, Zirkzee, Amad. Eight are homegrown: Rashford, Maguire, Shaw, Mount, Amad, Heaton, Darlow and Mee. Fifteen aren’t, two under the ceiling of 17.

Two things in that list are decisions, not defaults. Manuel Ugarte is registered even though the injury he picked up at the World Cup could keep him out into 2027. A club that expected to move him on wouldn’t spend the place. And Rashford, who spent last season at Barcelona, is on both lists without a question asked.

Leaving spaces isn’t unusual. Twelve of the twenty clubs registered fewer than 25. Manchester City and Chelsea named 20, Newcastle and Everton 19. United’s two open places can be filled after the January window without anyone being cut, which is exactly what you want when the summer left a left-back unsigned.

The 64, which is the actual story

Under the 23, the league publishes each club’s registered Under-21s. United’s column has 64 names. That’s the fifth-longest in the division, behind Brighton on 67, City on 66, Villa on 65 and level with Chelsea and Spurs. Then look at who’s actually home. City have 17 of theirs on loan, Chelsea 17, Brighton 10, Villa 12, Spurs 11. United have six. That leaves 58 Under-21 players at Carrington, and no other club in the Premier League has more.

Numbers like that can be padding. This one isn’t, because the names at the top of it are first-team footballers. Mainoo started against Ipswich and played well enough that a reporter asked Carrick on Friday how the three new midfielders fit around him. Yoro is the centre-back United paid Lille around ÂŁ52m for in 2024, and he’s still 20. Ayden Heaven, 19, started at Hull ahead of MartĂnez. Harry Amass, Godwill Kukonki, Diego LeĂłn and Cristian Orozco, the Colombian midfielder signed in August, are all there. So are Jack and Tyler Fletcher, Jim Thwaites and Shea Lacey. So is Tynan Thompson, the 18-year-old winger bought from Spurs in July for ÂŁ4m up front and ÂŁ4m in add-ons, after 13 goals and six assists across Tottenham’s age groups and seven goals in seven Youth League games.

Two names people will look for are there for a different reason. Kai Rooney and Jacey Carrick both appear because they became first-year scholars this summer, the first rung of the two-year apprenticeship for 16 to 18-year-olds. And one name isn’t there at all. JJ Gabriel is 15 and hasn’t reached the scholar stage, so he’s not on the Under-21 list either. He can still play. He already has a squad number.

The Champions League list is the same story in a different shape

UEFA’s rules are stricter. A club names up to 25 on List A, and the youth exemption, List B, only covers players born in 2005 or later who have been registered with the club for two unbroken years since turning 15. That’s why United’s 25-man Champions League squad includes Heaven and Thompson: Heaven arrived from Arsenal in February 2025, Thompson in July, and neither has two years at the club. Both had to take a senior place, and both got one.

Mainoo and Yoro are absent from List A for the opposite reason. Mainoo has been in United’s system since he was seven, scouted at six playing for Cheadle & Gatley Juniors. Yoro signed in July 2024, which is now over two years. Both qualify for List B and don’t need a senior place. Ugarte is on List A too. If United reach the knockout rounds they can register up to three new players by 4 February 2027.

The honest read

Registration lists don’t play. The left-back problem is the same size it was on Tuesday, and Carrick’s answer to it on Friday was Dorgu, who does it in training. Harry Amass and Diego LeĂłn, both 19, are the specialist left-backs in the Under-21 column, and neither has a league start this season.

But read the two documents together and the shape is clear. Twenty-three seniors with two places held back for January. Fifty-eight Under-21s at the club, more than anyone. A Champions League list that spent two of its 25 senior places on a 19-year-old centre-back and an 18-year-old winger, because the club wanted them available rather than parked. A summer that spent everything on midfield is easier to defend when the back of the squad already looks like this.

Everton away is Sunday, 9 AM Eastern. Mainoo will be eligible. He always was.
